Kain Colter is VERY familiar with similar tactics by The Cardinal. Denying admission is a way to deal with oversigning at Stanford. I think it is VERY low class. Tillman Decommits From Stanford West St. Mary (Baldwin, La.) DB Jontrey Tillman was informed over the weekend that he was denied admission to Stanford, despite a 4.0 GPA and 26 GPA... Jontrey Tillman pledged his services to Stanford in June 2011, but he got an unexpected phone call over the weekend. "Stanford called Jontrey at 5 P.M. Friday and told him he wasn't accepted," said West St. Mary head coach Ryan Antoine. "Their defensive coordinator had been here five times and the DBs coach was here last Monday. "They said they want him, but they can't question admissions or they will lose their jobs. I talked to Coach (David) Shaw on Saturday, and he said they can't control admissions. He said it's secretive." Antoine was perplexed. "Jontrey is devastated," he said. "This is a kid from a depressed socioeconomic environment who had been committed to Stanford since June. He turned down 20 scholarship offers and they tell him about this a week before National Signing Day? "I read an article that said Barry Sanders has a 3.2 grade point average, and another commit has a 3.7. How do you explain that?" Antoine says Tillman has the credentials: both academically and athletic-wise. "He runs a 10.3 in the 100 and a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash," stated Antoine. "Jontrey had 2,000 all-purpose yards as a senior with 5,000 over the past two years. He's an icon in this community who has broken every school record. "Jontrey didn't want to play in the basketball game Friday night, but to show you what kind of kid he is, he did play and hit the game-winning shot against Jeanerette." Which schools are now in the mix? "Houston is coming this week," said Antoine. "June Jones at SMU is coming tomorrow. Indiana will be here Wednesday; Colorado will be here on Friday. "I'm confused and frustrated. The coaches at Stanford had told me it's a no-brainer that Jontrey was going to be accepted. Now I'm trying to get his name out there. He's the hardest-working kid on this team. Jontrey only visited Stanford. He turned down other visits because he was committed to Stanford." |

But these universities really care about the kids. That's a bullshit move. |

We don't know why he was refused admission. And if we did, we all would have a big problem with any university that made such things public...not to mention the privacy laws a university would break by making such things public. You may be right in your assumptions. But you speak as if what you say is fact. Here is a fact that the reporter chose not to include....There are hundreds of kids each year that are not admitted to Stanford with a 4.0..And a 26 ACT is pedestrian for Stanford. . In that regard, what happened here is not that unusual. I will say that Stanford alums did not fully embrace Harbaugh because of various other crap he pulled that was more befitting of some cow college than Stanford. With his ethics, he is better off in the NFL. If your assumption is correct, this is a sign Shaw may have learned the Harbaugh way too well. |

True. I am assuming. There might be a skeleton we aren't aware of. But on the surface it looks no better than the grayshirting that the SEC does. At least they are more up front about why they aren't on scholarship. If it is as the writer suggests, it's one of the more despicable recruiting practices ever. I respect the suitcase full of money approach rather than this one. I had a chance to speak to Kain Coter one time at a team lunch, Stanford/Harbaugh did indeed take a shotgun approach to recruiting. Make lots of offers and then pull back offers once the bigger names committed. Every school does this to some extent, but apparently Stanford had been doing it more since Harbag got there. At the end of the day, Stanford is a great school. They now have a great football team. And perhaps its a little bit sour grapes because Stanford is the main school we recruit against. Andrew Luck's second choice was Northwestern. There are a ton of others we missed on too. But we do have two players Colter and Hampton that were effectively Stanford commits that de-committed because they got the heads up that what happened to Tillman was likely to happen to them too. |

Once may be a coincidence, but this is getting downright silly now. * Jontrey Tillman is rejected despite a 4.0 GPA and 26 ACT. Probably had nothing to do with Barry Sanders' committing to Stanford. ![]() * Johnny Caspers is admitted to Stanford with a 4.0 GPA and 28 ACT, but is told he no longer has a scholarship. Probably has nothing to do with Josh Garnett committing to Stanford. ![]() * Deante Gray decommits from Stanford and is headed to TCU. Probably has nothing to do with Kodi Whitfield confirming his commitment to Stanford after also considering UCLA. ![]() * Jameis Winston is admitted to Stanford within a week of completing his application, despite a reported 19 ACT. Probably has nothing to do with being ranked the #1 QB in the country. ![]() |

I follow Big 10 recruiting and I would suggest you see a little bit of gray-shirting, but nothing like this crap. I think you need to hold the institution to a higher standard. Frankly, I hope this shit gets some air time so other recruits know. Like I said before, I'd prefer the SEC suitcase full of money technique rather than this. |

Go Cats. F the Cardinal. Jontrey Reassessing his options Jontrey Tillman originally expected to sign with the Cardinal this Wednesday. But the versatile speedster from Baldwin (La.) West St. Mary found out on Jan. 20 that he was not accepted for admission at Stanford. "We thought it was a lock because Jontrey has a 4.0 GPA and he scored 26 on the ACT," West St. Mary head coach Ryan Antoine said. "If we didn't think it was a done deal, if we thought there was any possibility that he would not get accepted, Jontrey would have never committed. "It is a disappointing situation but we are moving on. He is fortunate that there are other colleges that are still interested this late. He has a second chance to start over with recruiting. He just wants to have a chance to trust a staff, that are going to help him as an all-around person, not just as a football player." Houston, Colorado, Washington State, Kansas and Northwestern are among the colleges that stopped by West St. Mary and expressed interest in Tillman before the dead period began Monday. Tillman took his first official visit to Houston last weekend and there is a chance he might visit Colorado this coming weekend. It is unlikely that Tillman will sign this Wednesday, the first day of the signing period for football. "He enjoyed his trip to Houston. It was an opportunity to go and see something different so he enjoyed that part of it," Antoine said. "I still have to confirm with him that he wants to visit Colorado this weekend. He has a basketball game and we are in conference play so I don't want to say he is going to take that trip just in case he doesn't do it." Tillman spent time playing running back, receiver and cornerback for West St. Mary. Antoine said he could end up playing any of those positions in college. "Jontrey could also be a return specialist," he added. Tillman earned first-team all-district and all-area honors last fall. "Jontrey is just a winner," said Antoine. "He makes everyone around him better with his work ethic. People just feed off of his enthusiasm. He is a joy to have, going to miss him." Tillman measured in at 5-foot-9, 183-pounds during his official visit to Houston. He has been clocked at a blazing 4.39-seconds in the 40-yard dash. |
