I believe there was a reason that no insurance companies were contacted that night.

can I copy files (pictures) from a Mac to an external drive and then over to a windows based pc?

When I plug in the external drive to the imac.....it recognizes the drive & I can navigate to it, but when I try and drag a picture to it from the mac I get the red circle with a line through it. Doesn't allow me to copy anything to it. Haven't spent much time trying to figure it out. Half-hearted attempt to get some vacation pictures on to a PC.

Not sure I quite understand... but it recognizes it on the PC, but won't let you do anything? May be formatted incorrectly. I think it has to be Fat32 to work on both.

That said, if you aren't formatted right (do not format it with files on it!), just use something like Dropbox or Google Drive.

It recognizes the drive on both mac & pc. Just cant copy files from the mac to the external hdd. I'm just going to use dropbox. Thanks!

Guessing it is NTFS then... because I think Mac's can read it, but they can't write to it.

If you want to be able to copy to both PC and Mac moving forward, you will need to backup that data and then reformat it.

Dropbox works too!

Just use a memory stick as an intermediary. That can be formatted FAT32 without messing up what you've already got set up on the Windows partition

Or: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/

They make $20 drivers that let your Mac read/write to a PC, and lets your PC read/write to a Mac. If it's a one-off deal, I'd use a memory stick.
