3 Today, albeit with really low numbers involved

Robert B Lewis Stakes-Santa Anita (20 points for the winner

I really like Madakat Road as an early KD selection.

Holy Bull Stakes-Gulfstream (20 points)

Not sure of the price but I like Tappan Street to get his picture taken

Withers Stakes-Aqueduct (20)

No opinion here

Saturday 0208

Big card at Tampa featuring the Sam F. Davis with 20 points for the winner

7-Poster will get a lot of attention but I like the fact that Flavien Prat leaves that horse to get onto my choice, the 3-John Hancock. This horse won on debut and could be sitting on another big effort. Boxing him with 6-Owen Almighty

Raace7 on the undercard features a pretty tough cast including the 8-McCorvey (out of Curlin/Songbird for the cost of 1 Million).

4 races in today and prices abound.

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens if Hawthorne doesn't get things straightened out with CDI prior to the Derby and all these once a year bettors show up at the OTBs trying to bet the Derby only to be told, "We aren't carrying the Kentucky Derby but you're more than welcome to bet Mahoning Valley or Delta Downs."

Hawthorne, CDI...what could go wrong?

Cowboy Dave isn’t going to let that happen.

I like DED, it's one of the tracks I look to bet. Racing is very likely toast here. Will Illinois outlast Florida?

Should be a solid undercard, weather is good too.

Here's a fun stat

The sire Volatile...First time starters on the dirt-55 starts/13 wins/22 in the money... +113% return on investment
Two such horses today

Race 4 the 5-Bundle 9/2 (Irad Ortiz/Asmussen)

Also Regarding Chad Brown and Prat...they also team up in the 12th with the 3-Unit Economics and in the 13th wit the 3-Ballerina d'oro

I'm completely unimpressed by this generation of three year olds.

I'm not buying the fig on Magnitude and he is a bet against for me in the Lousiiana Derby. I question his ability to go beyond a buck and an eighth. I think Chunk of Gold was the most impressive horse in the Risen Star.

I don't know what to think about the Baffert horses who have pretty much just beaten each other.

I suspect that some non-traditional preps might be key races in the run up to the Derby. Like the Leonatus and perhaps other Turfway preps and yesterday's Sunland Derby. Caldera looked as good as anything I've seen and we know Lukas can get one there and win it. A valedictory win for the Coach would be nice.

Saturday 0222

Rebel Stakes pushed back to tomorrow...today the lone race for the trail is in Florence KY at Turfway Park (Battaglia Memorial Stakes)....winner gets 20 points...I really like Eoin Harty's First Resort...Luis Saez comes north for the ride and he may be his horse going forward unfortunatley he scratched...Uncle Mo Colt keep an eye on him this Uncle Mo Colt...think the 7-Baby Max offers value here

Nice card at Oaklawn today

Rebel stakes I've got Madaket Road to take a big step on the trail...50 points awarded...I am concerned about him and the Derby distance but today should suit him fine

Race 10 the razorback the 2 banishing gets Prat aboard but will be chalky hoping to get a price on the 1Crupi or the 3 first mission

I think he rode perfectly. What else could he do? Up close was the place to be at a route. He had to send. A typical Baffert horse just keeps finding in that situation.

I got killed yesterday, but I never feel too bad when a square guy like Lonnie Briley wins a big race.

I think that horse that broke his maiden yesterday is the best Baffert three year old I've seen. Cornucopian. He'll probably win the Ark Derby.

If I had to make a favorite for the Kentucky Derby right now, I'm going with McCarthy's horse, Journalism. He's the best I've seen from this generation.

Big day of racing on tap…

San Felipe Stakes-Santa Anita 50 pts for the winner/25/15/10/5
Placed only hallway on the trail, this race has boasted 13 Derby Winners…Authentic won in 2020…

This is a chance to see JORR’s horse 2-Journalism who has had a nice start, but be facing stiff competition from the likes of 3-Barnes (Trained by Baffert, who has 3 of the 6 runners)…should be a really good finish between the two

Fountain of Youth Stakes-Gulfstream Park (50 pts winner/25/15/10/5)
This race has produced 7 winners, but only two since 1995

Not sure if the 6-River Thames is up to the distance, but a quality horse none the less…the 1-Gate To Wire won the Swale convincingly but now adds a furlong and a half…3-Burnham Square (Ian Wilkes) might be my favorite early on in this Derby run…love how this guy finishes…Ive got him getting his picture taken

Gotham Stakes-Aqueduct (50/25/20/15/10/5)
This race is 0-49 since 1980…kinda don’t care…No Lasix which will make for an interesting race...Mike Maker’s Calling Card ran well against another quality horse on the trail (Sandman) and has a win here locally

Burnham Square was a disappointment/River Thames got caught

Gotham Stakes-Aqueduct (50/25/20/15/10/5)

17-1 upset winner

Journalism's performance yesterday very impressive in the San Felipe, beating the heavy favorite, Barnes at 2-5.

He put up a fast time as well for 1 1/16 at 1:42:20. I'll take him in the Kentucky Derby.

I had Journalism with heavy win stats in his favor.

Post subject:  Re: 2025 Kentucky Derby Prep Races

The trail continues today with2 races…Louisiana Derby (100 Points) at Fairgrounds and the Jeff Ruby (100 points) at Turfway.

In New Orleans, I really like John Hancock and his battle in the Sam Davis against Owen Almighty was just tremendous. I’ve liked him (particularly his early speed which keeps him out of trouble) on this trail from the beginning and believe he will show up the 1st Saturday in May…Hypnus will be running hard late…Cold exacta JH/Hypnus.

At Turfway I think Poster who also was an impressive 3rd in the aforementioned Sam Davis…he trained here all winter and should a nice pace to close into…Flying Gambit will also benefit from the pace.
