Your point is not lost on me; there has.to be some level of discretion. For example, if you made a funny dig at me on here and I responded with an LOL emoticon and said "I'm gonna find where you live and kick your ass", I'm obviously saying it in a joking way even though a non-board member could interpret it literally. So I agree that there is some level of common sense and context that has to be used.

But in her situation here, it's someone she doesn't know who is making a very specific threat without any indication that it is harmless banter. He may be full of shit, but he might not.

No, Rick. We should use common sense. There are all kinds of threats made everyday in all types of social media. Is there some epidemic of people acted upon those threats. People say stupid shit on the Internet because they're anonymous and it's easy. I'm gonna find out where you live and come to your house tonight if you don't stop disagreeing with me. I think you can threaten someone on the Internet, but the question is, how much credence do we want to give such "threats"? I see the entire thing as an impetus for more regulation of the Internet, a time when each person will have to be registered and have an ID to express a thought on any digital platform. Maybe you think that's great. I'm sure some people do. DiCaro herself has suggested some type of hierarchical system where she belongs to a higher Twitter class due to her "Verified" status. The question I would then ask is, do the benefits of such a system outweigh the costs?

That's simple, although not true. If I'm standing a foot away with a sword in my hand when I threaten to chop your fucking head off it's a much more credible threat than if I post that I'm going to ass rape a guy named Gloopan Kuratz in the comments section of Deadspin.

At this point I'm not sure what you are arguing about.

Julie tweeted stupid thoughts, Julie tweets lots and lots of stupid thoughts. Those stupid thoughts are then met with a real person telling her that they are going to rape her.

She didn't tweet her thoughts to the guy directly, he sought them out (or "just happened to see this in my feed by complete accident, I seriously wasn't actually looking for it you guys") and then responded to her. If that's not harassment then what is?
