Don’t get the Joe Buck hate
He was on for an extended segment with Parkins and Spiegel yesterday, and I thought it was great. Spiegel wanted feedback on his play-by-play (as he's been subbing for Pat when Pat subs for Boog). Buck gave some great pointers while explaining the difference between TV and radio. Speigel's problem was not giving the fans the proper setup (he should be saying "here's the windup and the pitch" or some variation on that) so the listener has the anticipation for what's to come. On TV, Buck said he can get away with the minimal "Baez...Got him!" but on radio you have to do so much more.
I thought it also helped explain why Kasper wanted to move to radio. According to Buck, very few TV calls go down as classics, due to the nature of letting the picture tell the story.
Here's the infamous Brant Brown play, first with Pat and Ron, and then with Chip Carey and Stone. Carey calls it a line drive, and the he and Stone butcher the score, not immediately realizing the Cubs had lost. And as we know, the radio call is pure gold.
