I said it at the time, that this team had the talent to compete, and could turn it around with 60 games left.
I kept maintaining that MANY teams do this year after year.
In just TWO SHORT WEEKS, there are already numerous examples of teams that were "done", that have climbed back into the race, and teams that looked uncatchable, that have now fallen back to the pack.
Padres - still a good record, but it's hard to have 3 great teams in one division, if for no other reason that they beat up on each other. The Reds and Cardinals have made big runs and the Reds are only 1.5 games back of the wild card. Remember, two weeks, ago the Reds and Cards were thought of as AVERAGE teams.
Red Sox - were 10 games up on NYY a month ago after sweepin' em. Today, they are TIED with them, as NYY have been on a tear and just swept em in a DH today.
Mets - The Mets were leading the division. The Braves were UNDER .500 at the time. The Phillies were floundering. The Mets have come crashing back to Earth and the Braves have played GREAT after BUYING Soler. Atlanta and Philly have BOTH overtaken the Mets.
These are just the examples off the top of my head.
Not only that, the Cubs had an EASY schedule for SEVERAL weeks. Look at their opponenets until Sept 8: WAS, Colorado, vs White Sox, vs MIL, at MIA, at REDS, vs KC, vs COL, at White Sox, at Twins, vs PIT, vs CIN
Other than the White Sox (who no matter the records is always a split), and MIL (at home and they swept us last time so things balance out between division rivals), this was an EASY schedule to make some hay! How could Bully Hoyer overlook this!??
Yet hoyer wanted to run his players outta town just because of one long losing streak. Fuck him. We got ZERO elite prospects. We got guys of the level that WE coulda drafted regardless of how we finished. Had we kept Darvish, Caratini, & Schwarber, we'd be in great shape right now.
But we allowed the media and fans to dog our players, and they themselves wanted out. Nobody wants to hear they're gonna be traded every year. Nobody wants to hear their President and GM tell them they are merely pawns and will become a 'problem' or a 'decision' after 6 or 7 years. You treat them like your own. You treat them like they are there for the long term, and not until some breakpoint where we you fearmonger another same old tired 'plan' again just because it worked the first time. These are grown up professionals, not pawns or subjects. You dont trash the reputation of ur players to the media over the last several years. Even if it means you gotta lie to the media, that's what you do. It's like any business. You dont acknowledge the faults of your business to ur customers. You portray a great product. Same thing here. FUCK THEO EPSTEIN FOR HIS SHITTY RHETORIC (simply because he caved to the media and didnt want them to think he wasn't transparent), and FUCK BULLY HOYER FOR FOLLOWING SUIT. Fuck this city and its fanbase and media.
And FUCK U BRUCE LEVINE AND GORDON WHITTENMEYER FOR FEEDING THE FRENZY.
