Maybe I'm just a blind fan, but can someone think of ANY GM in history having a better offseason than Kenny Williams? I sure can't.
Hendry had a better offseason in 2004.
Wow, please tell me that you were joking.
i don't think he is....but i agree as well, sort of.
In hindsight it wasn't a better offseason...but when all those moves were made, it appeared absolutely genius...obtaining Derrek Lee, re-upping with the then coming off a pretty good playoff run Kerry Wood, reobtaining the services of Greg Maddux, picking up Michael Barrett...it all seemed so damn good, until the actual baseball started.
Lee was a very good move at the time (nobody expected numbers like last year though) and Maddux was a great SENTIMENTAL move but everybody knew he was on the downside of his career. I won't argue about the Wood signing at the time because his stock was very high. I remember a lot of skepticism also regarding Barrett but a belief that he had a good upside. Now lets compare this to last year and this year for Kenny Williams...
Last Year KW brings in Jermaine Dye, trades for Podsednik, Signs Iguchi, signs AJ Pierzinski. All of these moves could be picked apart at the time, but turned out much better than Hendry that year IMO in building a TEAM.
This year KW re-signs the hottest FA hitter in Konerko, trades for Jim Thome, re-signs AJ, trades for Vasquez, re-signs Garland, and signs Makowiak. He's now going into spring training with 6 legitimate starters and by far the best rotation in the league. Add in Bobby Jenks during the season and this is second to none in my humble opinion. We have 3 or 4 starters that would be a #1 on many MLB rosters. Just incredible.
