Cutting Bummer would have been a positive. His career effectively ended once he had to face three batters. The fact you got anything for him is just frosting on the cake. The shortstop is a solid defender who can hold down the position if you have to use him there until Montgomery arrives or he can be a good utility infielder. Nice to have a guy who can actually pick up the baseball.

Seems like they picked up additional roster options because they need bodies and aren't going to be spending big in free agency (with rumors that they are going to be cutting payroll).

Not very excited about the return, but they seem to want to add options for the rotation/middle IF.

No way that Hahn/Williams are able to pull off that deal. The value to Atlanta is freeing up four 40-man spots for prospects or free agents.

Shewmake is no worse than Lenyn Sosa or Romy Gonzalez. He will be a shuttle guy for the 13th position player spot.

Soroka is a massive lottery ticket on his health. But he was a good pitcher before all the injuries.

Lopez will bat 9th, field well, and be a Grifol ally in the clubhouse.

One of the better low end deals the Sox have made in a while. Could turn out as shit for shit, but the approach was solid.

Well said Chet

Solid return for Bummer.

My fear though, is that it's simply Atlanta dumping guys they weren't putting on the 40 man anyway, so they have room for free agents. And it's the Sox adding a bunch of guys because they aren't signing any free agents anyway.

Yep, Atlanta was likely going to non-tender a few of these guys so they jumped in and grabbed them.

I'm most excited about never having to see Bummer pitch again.

I can't believe there are so many Sox fans lamenting the departure of Benetti. I couldn't stand that fucker.

Is Frank C dead or something? He hated Bummer. I thought for sure he would be here delivering a parting shot.

Braves rejects for Bummer. Minus last year Bummer's era is 3.03. Watch the Braves straighten him out.

Simple couldn't understand that Bummer was very difficult for lefthanders to hit. Forcing him into situations where he had to face often multiple righties (3 better minimum) was the death knell for his effectiveness.

I really don't think there are. I think this is a case of the media loving him and a small group who took to the internet with their grievance.

Well we know that Katz isn’t straightening him out so there was no need to keep him. And any hope that Katz will fix Soroka is just idiotic. He has ruined more pitchers than he will ever “fix”.

Hard to expect him to do so. Not sure how he still has a job here.

I think that Bummer left himself way too open on his delivery and got hit because of it. The fact that he was never straightened out is an indictment on both his pitching coaches and himself. Pitchers need to try and hide the ball through their delivery no matter how good their stuff is. He had very good natural stuff but it was easy to spot what was coming and to some extent where it would finish.

I know where it finished. 36 BB, 5 HBP, and 6 WP.

That is true. A lot of hitting requires the hitter to spot the ball out of the pitcher's hand. If a pitcher can hide the ball and its release point, his brain then the hitter can't calculate where the ball will be when it reaches him. Its a false notion that hitters need to "follow the ball" to the plate. You can't do it and still hit the ball. Instead hitting is about reading the ball and swinging for a collision between the ball and the bat or not swinging at all because of the pitch not being a strike.

Bummer allowed the first hitter he faced to reach base 34% of the time in 2023.
In 2022, he allowed 47% of the first hitters he faced to reach base.
He's had a 1.52 WHIP over the last two seasons.

If Jorr thinks this is good or somehow worth the $20 million he is still owed, he might as well do the world a favor and ride his bike into oncoming traffic.

The fact that Getz was able to acquire 5 players for one shit reliever is awesome. If if only one guy halfway works out, this is a great trade for the Sox. Cannot be argued otherwise.

Bummer is also a guy who pitches to contact so a better defensive team like the Braves is likely to benefit him.
