that Ozzie skipping out on the White House visit might be a smart, tactical move? I'm not saying this is the case, I have no way of knowing anyhow, but perhaps Ozzie is in fact protecting his players by staying away. It is clear that he has much more allegiance to Chavez than to Bush, so it's possible that's he's trying to avoid having his players caught in an uncomfortable situation of taking sides between their leader and their country. A wise man once said, "When you realize you've dug yourself into a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging". I think Ozzie knows this is a lose-lose situation. The Chavez-Bush relationship, the Guillen-Chavez relationship, etc. No matter what Ozzie does, there are going to be non-baseball related stories taking the headlines here. Perhaps him going and being candid would do more damage than not going at all. In which case, it'd be best for Ozzie to stay out of the way and let his players enjoy the moment. Just a thought...

Excellent points, and it would seem as such. But when has Ozzie ever been one to put his players in a difficult position, like this one where they may be asked to explain their manager's absence?

You guys are overthinking. Mrs. Guillen must have simply said: "You're not going anywhere until our vaca is over, or you'll sleep on the couch in the front room the rest of your life." (Any spanish buffs willing to translate this?)

The woman doesn't see her husband between mid-late February and November (longer this years because of all the Championship hoopla.) They finally get together, head out to someplace warm and all of a sudden the White House trip comes up. As much as it grates me that he is disrespecting The Office and a well-stablished tradition, I can understand him.

I agree, to me this is not a big deal. The only thing that offends me is the people calling in saying Ozzie owes everything he has to the United States. That is total bullshit. As if the guy came here on a fucking raft, road out the rough seas, and was greeted with riches and bitches as soon as he hit American shores. Everything he has, he worked for and earned. Besides, I’m an American, and yet every Monday through Friday I hear the alarm clock ring in the morning, my cue to get off my ass and go to work. I suppose I should thank Uncle Sam for that blessing, right?

You may be the only English speaker in the entire world who can make this statement.
