Thats my area player.

I know all the spots. Q-Bo probably does too.

There are a lot of good places in the Crestwood-OakForest-Tinley-Orland area

Love Merichka's...that garlic butter is liquid crack.

You may be thinking of Hog Wild. I agree they have the best pork chop around...puts Ditka's to shame.

I swear I saw a guy who must have weighed 500 lbs. in there ask for "two extra Butterines". And then he poured them all over his steak sandwich. It was a bit much.

There have only been two occasions in my life when I felt like I might have a heart attack after eating. Once was at Merichka's after that butter-soaked steak and the other was after eating chicken livers and eggs at Sweet Maple Cafe. I can't wait to go back!

I feel like I now weigh 3 bills from reading this. I'm going to eat vegetables for the next 2 days to recover.

A relish tray doesn't have to be great (Petey's is fantastic though and on Sundays they add little meatballs), it's more about the idea of it. It harkens back to a time of great indulgence. Big drinks. Big Steaks. Chicago style. Like, it wouldn't be Merichka's without the mediocre cole slaw and cottage cheese.

Indeed. The scrumptious M&P relish tray has that awesome liver sausage, pretzel rolls, topped with chopped egg and onion.

Back to Jack Gibbons, though, the waitresses are crabby because it doesn't matter. They don't need people off the street to come there and fall in love with the service, as they are never empty on a dinner night. The place has been there since 1917 and is more along the lines of a neighborhood speakeasy - almost "Burt's Pizza-esque" with their refusal to cowtow, but not that bad. The steaks are excellent cuts, although they have only recently been scaled down a notch. (they used to be ENORMOUS). Anyhow, until the recent dearth of financial prominence, they had a built-in test to see if you were a "regular": The original owner HATED soup: thought that serving it was a sign of poverty and thought that to keep it was unsanitary, as it is almost impossible to make fresh by the bowl. They only started serving it 2 years ago because of incessant complaints from gruff patrons suffering in a faltering economy. Previous to that, when a whiny customer would ask for soup, the grizzled old waitress would know right away whether they were experienced Gibboneers or just newbs. Not a big deal, but enough to notice. I always found it fun sitting in the piano/jazz room and listening in to hear if any newbs were in the house.

Morale of the story: you don't go there for service - The waitress is just a human tray with a pencil. I think they make it intentionally bad, actually, but not in an Ed Debevic's way. They still didn't change after they were reviewed on Check Please - why would they? The Steak and Lobster are the showpieces, not the servers. The filet, strip and Porterhouse, all drenched in the famed proprietary lemon butter sauce, are amazing, but THE LOBSTER is the pies de resistance! - the juiciest sonofabitch I have ever had - it is delectable. I once did a Monday-Tuesday showdown with JG's surf and turf vs. House of Hughes, and there was no comparison.

If you go on Fridays, the old jazzman is there playing, and the atmosphere is awesomely 20's-esque. Take a new girl there on such a night, and she'll think you're a Don!

Why would I ever consider going to a place that goofs on first time customers?

I did some work for Mark about fifteen years ago or so, and he was telling me he needed his crowd to get younger. Telling me that my friends and I should hang out there. He's got a tough go of it. I imagine if he makes the slightest change in anything he's got a bunch of blue-haired Jewish ladies from Lincolnwood screaming about how it was better before.

We don't take kindly to your type 'round these parts, NORTH-SIDER!

That's why.[/quote]

suburbanites have no business getting into a northsider/southsider discussion

You can't get a seat after 4....until 7 rolls around.

I used to love Bones on lincoln and touhy. It made great ribs and seemed to do a good business. They changed it to L. Woods. A few years ago my brother was meeting with Melman and asked him why they ever changed during the casual conversation part of the day. He said he couldn't make money with the old couples coming in and ordering 1 slab of ribs to split then loading up on the rolls and free appetizers only to take the ribs home.

Nice. I love these back stories. I tried L. Woods about 8 years ago - still thought Gale Street was better.

Yeah, you know when they first reopened as L. Woods they didn't serve ribs. The old folks howled so loud that Melman was forced to put the Bones ribs back on the menu. That wasn't his intention. Personally, I never order the ribs. I'm a big Sima's pounded chicken kind of guy.

And Panther, I know you're a guy with immense respect for bigfan's rules so I want to warn you that your repeated insistence that Gale Street has the best ribs might be some sort of violation as far as our own bigbbqfan is concerned.

Reminds me of an episode of No Reservations where Tony and a guy are at this New York steakhouse, which is best described as a bar that serves really good bar food. The guy with Tony comments on how pathetic looking the relish tray is, saying that it should be that way, as to insult you that you would even think about eating such a thing there.

+1

Reminded me more of an upscale Chili's rib dinner.

I've been everywhere, man.
