I had an '83 Monte Carlo with what I think was a 265 cubic inch V-8 engine. It only put out 110 hp. The front seat was a bench. It was destroyed by that Shell Station on Rte 72 near Woodfield where you used to get a free car wash with tank fill up. The brush fell off while I was in the car wash, and it acted like a can opener down the passenger side of my car. Prom night too.
It's crazy how just about every modern four cylinder engine puts out more horsepower than a 40 year old V8.
I think about that all the time. I had an 84 Camera with a 305 that put out about 175. My Audi S4 was a six cylinder putting out 333, and my current ride (queue humbleboy) is an F Pace SVR with 550 and gets up to 60 in under four seconds as an SUV.
When they tightened the CAFE standards it was really the V6 engine that took the hit. They used to be everywhere, now most mainstream passenger cars (Accord, Camry, Sonata, etc.), just offer naturally aspirated 4's and turbo 4's.
