The entire concept of the Nanny State can go fuck itself.

This tax is simply theft to fund corruption

Get the fuck outta here.

There are just under 900k in cook county on SNAP.

So in short yes the poor consume more soda and also use food stamps to pay for it, you douchebag.

One of the stories I saw on this was that the reason the judge granted the order was because there was no plan or tracking in place for refunds to be provided if the tax was deemed unconstitutional.

No issue with this tax. I'm bothered by the water tax.

I on the other hand have an issue with it and I'm not a pop drinker. I am not a fan of government imposing more taxes so that they can mismanage more of our money....GTFO!!

I'm not a pop drinker but if a tax can reduce obesity then I'm all for it.

It can't.

Exactly my point. I'm sure there are better ways to help reduce obesity without mismanaging more tax money.

This has 0% to do with health (or else SNAP would not be exempt). This is 100% about revenue generation, but they disguise it under the banner of health to minimize the outrage.

These are rarely about the good for the community and 100% about revenue generation. Just like our for profit prison system and the most of the tickets from our police system.

I'm all for taxing poor people. They should tax used tires too.

I drink a lot of diet pop and "Ice" drinks with vitamins. I still don't get why diet pop falls under "sugar tax". Every study I have read saying diet pop is bad has been inconclusive. They leave out the fact that fat people still order fast food with their diet pops. Like I tell my wife, diet is just that. No calories,no sugar.

Because it's a bullshit name instead of calling it by it's real name ... the "we have no skill or ideas and besides we're too lazy to actually try to fix shit, so fuck everyone" tax.

It looks like it went into effect. I can't wait to see this tax fail and for the county to collect less in sales tax revenue when smart shoppers cross the county line to buy.

A great tax.

I will buy less pop because of this.

Thanks Cook County!

Now if they could tax chips then I'll be well on my way to clean eating.

Friend of mine posted on FB today. $2.88 tax on a $5.99 case of Sprite. That blows for those not able to go to the collars.

If a fat slob is too lazy to workout, he will also be too lazy to drive many miles to pick up soda.

They should move, and I'm not even posting that as a joke.

Between this, the income tax increase, etc. I will laugh when Illinois breaks 50,000 people moving out of the state this year or next.

Soda addiction is a real deal problem. It was hard for me to give up the sugary sweetness, but I'm glad I did like 6 years ago. Lost weight, and felt better immediately.

for a single pack of soda, sure, but I bet many will buy in bulk (at places like Costco) or just do their entire grocery shopping trip out of the county. I spend about $180 a week on groceries so if I lived in Cook County and did my trips in DuPage county, that change being done by many other households would really add up in lost sales tax revenue.
