you don't realize that you're role-playing? you're essentially doing the same thing a general manager/head coach does--drafting, making trades, adding/cutting players...you are *playing the role*.

Okay....playing the role of a GM is fair. But you are dealing with actual human beings (football players) that will perform in actual games. In Dungeons and Dragons and other games like that you are dealing with fictional beings and circumstances. Again-apples and oranges.

so...what? you're still dorky for spending the time. look if you started an everest fantasy league and you followed climbers of everest, you'd probably be labeled a "mountain climber geek" because...why? it's not the most popular sport to follow or even a sport so therefore it's lame...blah blah...you're still a geek for the amount of time you spend on something that has nothing to do with real life. the games that the players play are meaningful to them, and their fans. to people who are just using their stats to give "Breesus, Barry, and Joseph Namath" the edge over "Dawg Pounderz", it's just dorky fantasy fun. That's it. All of it is fantasy, all of it is role playing. It doesn't mean a thing to your actual life what happens in a fantasy football game. 10/12 teams don't make money off of it...and even if you did, you still did it by being a dork. nobody cares about your d&d campaigns, and nobody cares about your fantasy football team.

d&d at least uses your imagination, though.

You sound like one of the dorks that used to hang out at the internet cafe we took the space from to open an exercise facility. Those idiots would probably agree with your Dungeons and Dragons crap, but normal guys (your man card is revoked) know that stuff is for dork losers. Fantasy Football revolves around the great game of football and is enjoyed by real guys.

exactly the response a loser meathead would give. and just as cornball and homoerotic (you would open an exercise facility?).

have fun in your fantasy world, guy.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that you were one of those assholes this picked on the "nerds" in school too...I'm not a Magic or D&D fan, myself, but they are mental activities that drive creative parts of the brain, and I can respect that. It's painfully obvious that you don't have a creative part of your cro-magnon brain (let's face it, I've heard your calls...my favorite was your last one to B&B, because you never called again). You really are a bit of a douchebag bully...it makes perfect sense that you were a cop.

I love the unintentional comedy of your posts. I can't say that enough. Do you realize just how hilarious you are? A guy who calls up a radio station multiple times in the same day should never, ever, ever cast stones at anyone for doing something lame. Anyone who has to buy a ticket to play fantasy football with strangers shouldn't call something lame.

I've played Magic one time in my life, and while it's not my thing it's kind of fun. As for the "dorks" they probably aren't exactly in awe that some guy who paints houses thinks they aren't real men.

But Rick, he's a VIP! He was GIVEN a ticket to that "non-nerd fest." Nevermind that 3/4 of the tickets to the event were handed out for free, his free tickets were the most special.

Thanks for the correction. That changes everything. Putting literally hundreds of hours a year making phone calls is so much better than hanging out with your friends playing a card game. You even get a reward in the 10's of dollars for your trouble! Also, you can get a free round of golf when you hound Jurko for it! You didn't even have to be racist to get these things! Those nerds wish they could be Elmhurst Steve. I think we all do.

The time I spend talking with the guys on the radio is done while I am working. I am listening to the radio and a subject comes up that I want to comment on, so I do so. It's not a matter of choosing to call into a radio show vs playing cards with friends though. I wouldn't be playing Texas hold-em at 10:30 am or 2:30 pm on a weekday, thats a time I would be working. I play Texas hold-em on the first Friday of the month in the EVENING. As far as hounding Jurko....I had waited very patiently for Jurko to pay up. It had been 10 months since he lost the bet before I really got into it on the air. It's not like I was going to just forget about collecting on the bet though. If you have any honor and integrity you really should pay off a bet within a month or less. That I had to take it public and embarrass him was unfortunate. but I did collect on the bet finally, so it's a non-issue now. as far as wanting to be me....I'm sure you are being quite sarcastic, but I am very happy with my lot in life.

The point is that some guys find it lame to spend hundreds of hours a year thinking about and making calls to radio shows. Others think that playing a card game is lame. Thanks though for letting us know that you have a scheduled card game. I don't see much of a difference between Magic The Gathering and a local poker game either.

You don't see a difference between playing Texas hold-em for money (not high stakes, but the winner walks away with 700-1200 dollars generally, depending on whether someone wins it all or the game ends because of the time of night) and a bunch of geeks playing something you call "Magic the Gathering" ?? You must be one of those geeks to even know the name of the game   Hey, whatever ....go have fun competing in one of those role playing bits like in Role Models (let us all know if you storm the castle successfully!!) for all I care. But don't try to lump Texas hold-em in with your nonsense.

No. I don't. Magic cards are worth money too and they can change hands during the course of the game. If they wanted to gamble they certainly could. It's not that hard to put real money up on anything.

I played the game once with a friends cards. It's fun but it's not really my thing. Why is it funny though? Is your life of radio calls, bowling leagues, and painting something that Magic players would be jealous of? I have to be honest, radio caller seems to be the geekiest thing of all on there.

Wow. You got me good. I love how a guy who paints houses just made fun of my life and did it inaccurately. Good luck going over your bowling statistics.

Right. It doesn't matter what he does, he is a stroke. I'd be willing to bet his "friends" think so too.

they call it "Magic: the Gathering" too, actually...because that's the name of it. and they make money on tournaments for it as well.

i guarantee you never even heard of texas hold 'em until "rounders" became a cult hit about 8 years ago.

Are you for real? You don't realize that the "nerdiness" you were brought up to ridicule is a figment of your own reality?

I have heard that many of the best "D & D" or "Magic" players actually go on to become professional poker players. What is the distinction between the two for you? What separates a board game (or whatever they are) from a card game? Because they play poker in mob movies, you think it's cool? Please explain.

I'll do my best to explain....If you look at the kind of people that would play Dungeons and Dragons or Magic the Gathering-whatever... it would be the kind of people that would be all in for Harry Potter (never have seen one-no desire to either) or Star Wars/ Star Trek kinda stuff. It's the kind of stuff that people make fun of because it's LAME and Burrito. I was playing Texas hold-em in college well before Rounders was ever filmed and have been in a regular game with guys I have played softball with for 12-14 years. We drink a few beers, eat some pizza, smoke a couple cigars and play poker. It's a nice relaxing evening. Unlike D&D it's not the kind of thing the neighbors would be snickering about behind your back either. But hey, good for you that you let that kind of thing roll off your back and enjoy your D&D games with your little friends.

Got forbid "those types of people" do something they may enjoy...even if it's not considered "popular" by the mouthbreathing mainstream. To establish, I have never played a card game or D&D, but I also never made fun of those that did. In fact, I have friends that do. It's chess with a creative element to it. Is chess for dorks, Steve? Do you make fun of those guys because they're thinking?

Never made fun of them?? Come on...I suppose you never made fun of the huge nerds that dress up in costume to attend the opening night showing of a Star Wars movie either?? Those people are practically begging to have people make fun of them. As far as your chess question...No, I never had any inclination to make fun of chess players. It's a game I began playing at a young age and enjoyed. But I will say this....I never would have joined the chess club in High school. Thats the kind of thing that would tend to tarnish ones reputation. I never remember anyone expressing how cool it would be to be in the chess club. It was pretty high on the nerd scale. But it would still be far better than someone playing Dungeons and Dragons.
