Give Mully and Haugh credit. They had this one correct.

CHGO didn't have Loveland as a first round pick. That's malpractice.

Wanny said he thought it the trade up to 2 by the Jags could be for Tyler Warren over the air last night, funniest thing he's said in a long time.

Did you see Ben Johnson's phone call with the Loveland? Lions ran two TEs the third most in the NFL last year as well.

I thought you would know this seeing as how Poles told you Jeanty was the pick weeks ago.

Just like Eberflus on the phone with the first round pick years prior. It's kind of standard practice.

I'm not talking about the existence of the call, those happen with every pick. Johnson was giddy on the call, look it up.

Both Poles and Jeff King said that Loveland was a better fit with "coaching"

Everyone keeps talking about how Ben Johnson ran the most two tight end sets in the NFL last year. Well the 2nd tight end, Brock Wright had 13 catches for 100 yards.

One of Kmet/Loveland will be basically useless next year. People act like this will be Gronk/Hernandez part 2.

I do believe that they (poles and johnson) loved Jeanty and they were trying to move up for him. I think we will hear the price was too great.

Brock Wright isn't a pass catching TE. He had 7 career receptions at ND and was an UDFA.

Because they had the best Oline in football. Not because of their 2nd TE.

I don't exactly understand the slide that Sanders is having but this is a pretty good icy cold take.

Incremental growth is my issue here. Could Loveland be better than Kmet? Sure. Materially so? Probably not.

So you’ll go back to looking for depth in later rounds while your OL is a patch work of old guys and maybe-ok young guys and your dline is 1.5 guys and a FA.

Well said.

My first reaction was a facepalm. I do not like the pick, but I am objectively looking at the board and it's really hard to find a pick that doesn't look like you're stretching for need over best player available.

I personally am intrigued by Grey Zabel, but I'm sure plenty would have called that a reach. Agree with the others that they probably wanted to trade down, but the offers were not there. The draft as a whole looks underwhelming. They have to address DL and OL with remaining picks. They're still average at best in those areas.

Kmet does not get good separation can be covered by a linebacker. Johnson seems to think this won't be the case with Loveland. Also, you really can't split Kmet out, something that Johnson is going to try to do with Loveland.

The Bears are also not coached by a dumbass gym teacher anymore, Ben Johnson actually has a track record of offensive success and talent evaluation. If he thinks Loveland makes the offense better, I'm inclined to believe him.

So it sounds like Kmet is going to become useless in this offense, which you kind of hope, considering Loveland is supposed to be the next Laporta

The more I observe Johnson, the more uncomfortable I become with him as coach. But as you say, he's got a good track record. I just hope he's not a Peter Principle guy.

Correct.

So trade him while he’s still a top 10-15 tight end and hasn’t spent a year as a glorified offensive lineman.

There is room for both TE's to have good production.

The reason Detroit didn't have a second TE with a lot of catches is because seemingly their second tight end was pretty terrible at it.

What track record of talent evaluation?

Detroit has a strong GM and HC. I’d imagine they had more to do with roster construction than Johnson.

I wouldn't trade him for anything less than a second. He was drafted in the second, he has justified the pick and he is signed for three more years at a reasonable amount.

But

I think Johnson wants to do something with two tight ends.

The rumors of the Kmet demise are greatly exaggerated. He'll catch 40+ and have the best YPC of his career. Book it.

We have a correlation/causation thing with a little only-one-ball sprinkled in.

How many great offenses have two strong tight ends? Maybe Buffalo?

If you want to believe Johnson had nothing to do with Gibbs and LaPorta, be my guest.

There are multiple teams that have two TEs get 40+ catches.

There also isn't a lot of depth at the TE position. Only 32 TE in the NFL had 40+ catches.

So while it is rare to have two strong tight ends that is more because it is rare to actually have two players at the position who are worthy of getting the ball thrown to them.
