He's better than Warren.

Based on what?

He’s smaller, slower, less accomplished at actually playing football and seemingly a worse blocker.

He’s injured. It’s just idiotic.

Don’t forget pre-injured.

If you wanted a tight end you had the next great one on the board last year.

That’s what makes this even worse.

I don’t hate Rome or anything, but how could you pick that guy over the future of the tight end position and then come back to draft a pre-injured guy who didn’t do a whole lot of actually playing football a year later?

I’d have disliked a Warren pick; this is a whole other level of Poles going full Poles.

This team goes into next year relying on an OL full of FAs, a dline full of…idk…and what should be a solidly above average tight end room.

This is obviously a Johnson pick, as were the offensive line acquisitions during free agency.

My buddy is trying to spin this on age - Loveland is younger than Warren, ergo his relative lack of accomplishment is fine, because hypothetical Loveland may someday be as good at football as actual Warren at some point in the future.

*assuming he’s not sidetracked by injuries, which is definitely going to happen

Then fire Poles and let Johnson be the personnel guy.

Either way, fire Poles.

He looks like he's significantly quicker and is a better route runner than Warren. Your guy Johnson seems to agree with me. Also, the scouts I've heard discuss him say that he was asked to do more as a blocker than Warren and excelled in that regard.

On that, at least, we can agree. I wanted Poles gone a year ago.

Yeah, I wouldn’t go hard on Warren over Loveland. He had risen above Warren in many places by today

It’s probably too late but they should try to get something for him before he has zero value.

In all seriousness, they should call up the Jets asap and see what they’d offer. There were some Warren rumors at that 7th pick and Kmet/Fields have history, so could be a good fit for both sides.

And it could hypothetically give Poles another pick to take a midmajor backup tackle who needs a hip replacement but might be good if he can ever play football well.

The Bears weren’t a 5 win team because they lacked a good TE.

Kmet isn’t a perfect TE, but he’s a perfectly fine TE. He’s better than Loveland on Sept 1. The Bears spent a top 10 pick on a backup TE.

Maybe it's obvious but seems to me their first choice was to trade down but couldn't make that happen.

The Bears showed the can get max value for a distressed asset when they traded Fields for one of those rotating racks that holds hotdogs.

I like Kmet a lot. I think he’s a top 10ish TE in the league and they drafted a guy who, at best, probably doesn’t add a ton of incremental value.

Teams have limited resources and the Bears have too many chips in the TE bucket at this point. Something’s gotta give and it’s not going to be the rookie top 10 pick.

My favorite draft day fan is the “trade down” guy, who thinks there’s some sort of omnipresent market full of teams that can’t wait to unload a bunch of picks to move up into your spot, irrespective of talent/need.

My second favorite draft day fan is the guy who compares every pick to a hall of famer. Everybody has the skill set of Warren Sapp; very few get “if everything goes well, this guy could be a Henry Melton type on the interior.”

Mel Kiper's love for Sanders is weird. He is visible shaken that Sanders has fallen in the draft. He just went on a rant naming all the pocket QB's who teams passed up, Brady, Montana, Brees exc. and said they will regret passing on Sanders.

His predraft rant about how he’s an extremely accurate pocket passer gave the game away.

Either Shdeion is paying him or he’s trying to ingratiate himself with the Shanders for reasons unknown.

As if I wasn’t already extremely wary of Ben Johnson for him signing up to work with Caleb Williams, Ryan Poles and the inbred McCaskeys this pick is a very bad sign.
