As Deflategate looms over the heads of the New England Patriots, a source with the NFL has revealed that the league is considering permanently barring Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick from ever working in the National Football League in any capacity.
That drastic action would only be taken if it is discovered that Belichick was directly responsible for the deflated footballs. ESPN reported that “NFL has found that 11 of the New England Patriots’ 12 game balls were inflated significantly below the NFL’s requirements.”
The NFL is also exploring other options, which include: loss of draft picks, a $500,000 fine, and a year suspension for all players and personnel complicit in the scandal (with the exception of Belichick, who would be barred for life.) The league is also considering forfeiting New England’s lopsided victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
The NFL would label the Patriots organization habitual offenders, who were also caught videotaping New York Jets’ defensive coaches’ signals during a September 9, 2007 game (known as Spygate). Belichick was officially fined $500,000. The Patriots organization were fined $250,000 and were stripped of their 2008 first-round draft pick.
