Kings SUCK (definitely)

For whatever it's worth, Sacramento has a larger metropolitan area than the following NBA cities:
Charlotte
Portland
San Antonio
Indianapolis
Salt Lake City
Milwaukee
Oklahoma City
Memphis
New Orleans

So they're right in the same tier as everyone else, the "do well and we'll make it work" market size.

But you're not disagreeing with my premise that their recent death spiral is what finally sent fans away. The Kings went from 4th in attendance percentage in 2007 to 18th in 2008 to 29th in 2009.

Sources told ESPN.com that NBA teams were formally notified Sunday night that the Kings have been valued at $525 million and that the Maloofs and a group led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen have executed a purchase and sale agreement, which the NBA confirmed through a statement Monday morning.

I blame Tyreke Evans. But really was Sacramento a market that could have a proper Major League team. The NBA needs a team in seattle. Too bad they went from Durant/Westbrook to Tyreke Evans/Demarcus Cousins

The fans in Seattle supposed the original SuperSonics for 4 decades before the previous owner relocated the franchise to Oklahoma City as the Thunder as we all know. This move, if it becomes a reality, is long overdue for that fan base. Interestingly enough, should the NBA approve the sale of the Sacramento Kings to this Seattle group, consider these things. First, the Kings would be no more. Much like when Cleveland returned to the NFL about a decade ago as an expansion team and as the Browns, there's a deal in which the NBA franchise in Seattle would be known again as the SuperSonics, complete with the team's yellow & green colors & logo. Second, the NBA team would actually play 2 seasons at Key Arena while a new downtown arena is being constructed in Seattle. Interestingly enough, Key Arena was a big reason why the Sonics' previous owners bolted to OKC. They wanted a new arena to a point where they broke their original lease to pack their bags for Oklahoma City. One other thing. Would the new Sonics actually inherit the old Sonics' records? When the old Sonics relocated to OKC as the Thunder, the records followed them there. I kid you not!

When plans for a new arena to replace what's now called Sleep Train Arena (the former ARCO Arena) fell through, they weren't going to stay much longer. I don't think former Phoenix Suns' guard turned Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was all that confident that he could coax the Maloof brothers into keeping the franchise there for the long haul. I think this deal was a long time coming.

Of those NBA cities, guys, Portland, San Antonio, Oklahoma City & maybe Salt Lake City have solid fan bases and have been able to survive. Until recently, Memphis was one of those NBA cities that I wasn't sure had enough fan support to last long term. As for Indianapolis & Charlotte, they love their basketball alright...college basketball, that is.

Sacramento is slightly bigger than I gave it credit for I guess. I have never been to that part of California. The NBA also shouldn't be in Charlotte, New Orleans or Milwaukee for that matter.

Seven straight years of being bad isn't rebuilding. It's just being bad. The Maloofs made a lot of really bad investments and starting taking the basketball market for granted, running a shoestring operation with the Kings while they flailed around trying to save their casino. They've also made it to Stern's shit list to the point that he just wants them out of the club forever.

Very happy to be seeing basketball return to Seattle. Some of my favorite players growing up played in the great Northwest. Dale Ellis, Xavier McDaniel, Shawn Kemp, Nate McMillan Detlef Schrempf and Gary Payton come to mind immediately.

The NBA shouldn't be in Charlotte & New Orleans, especially if their fan bases can't support their teams. What's unfortunate about Charlotte & Indianapolis is that BOTH teams play in relatively new arenas, but college buckets are more of an item than the Pacers & Bobcats respectively. I think you could have said the same about Memphis, where the Tigers had filled FedEx Forum more often than their NBA co-tenants the Grizzlies until recently.
