Saw first show in the late 80s...Also saw them in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. I guess that is four decades.

Also saw Mötley Crüe 2x and Ted Nugent 2x (opening for KISS). I'm sure I saw some 80s hair metal bands open for KISS on more than one occasion.

I've seen a shit load of bands more than twice but two that come to mind that I saw a lot were the Replacements, about 11 or 12 times and Cheap Trick, I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times. I know the first time was at the Aragon and in fact, it was my first concert in like '77 or '78. They opened up for Rush and we and most metalheads there thought they were some kind of joke. Pretty Boy Zander and goofy looking Nielsen. And that drummer looked like somebody's dad. I was too young and dumb to understand just how much greater than Rush they were.

I'm jealous....i would have loved to see the Replacements even once. I passed on Westerberg solo a few times once his solo tours started. Even though the first one was pretty flaccid I still liked it, everything else after that sucked and then i stopped caring

i've probably seen a ton of bands 2 or 3 times, but i think of ones i've seen close to 10 times or more

You know, they'll probably always be my favorite band. I hit them just right. I found that first album at Record City in Skokie right when it first came out. I saw them the first time they came through Chicago. I think it was at the old Exit on Wells. Then at the Cubby Bear. The Del Fuegos were on one of those bills. But I can't really think of one show that stands out like that twilight Flaming Lips show at Lolla. Maybe the one at NIU where they did a bunch of covers. I think that was in '85. I got in a fight right before the show at the Riv, maybe in 1987. Fuckin' guy busted my nose. I watched the show with a couple napkins stuffed up there. I guess that was pretty memorable. They covered Prince that night. I remember because Tommy was screaming , "NO, NO, NO!" at Westerberg who just ignored him and cranked right into the riff. But I watch that show from '82 that's on the TwinTone site, I never saw them as hot as that. When they opened for Petty I thought it was sad. Not right.

That last show at Grant Park has become so legendary. At the time I just thought it was okay. There were rumors, but I didn't really think it would be their last show. In a way, they had played their last show when they kicked Bob out. I don't really think most of the bands I like should play outside during the day. There were babies in strollers and people from Schaumburg eating fried pickles on a stick and waiting for the fireworks for God's sake. I felt bad seeing Lou Reed at the Skyline stage during the day. I don't think Lou Reed should even come out before dark.

Just a couple weeks ago my girlfriend's brother-in-law was all proud showing me a recording of the Grant Park show on his big screen. He couldn't believe I was there. He kept asking me if it was great. I couldn't really say so. I did notice fucking Twins fan Westerberg take a shot at the White Sox during "Within Your Reach."

I'm not a "Westerberg can do no wrong" guy, but I liked his first run of solo records up until Suicaine Gratification. He got me back with the lo-fi stuff and Stereo/Mono was great. The songcraft is always there and if you're patient enough to wade through the noise there are great moments in these recordings he's releasing online. In a way it's like GBV, but I've always found Pollard to be somewhat affected and with Westerberg that's never the case. He is who he is.

I've seen the Dead three times. Once at the Uptown, I think in 1980 and then at Alpine Valley and the last time was at Poplar Creek in the early 80s.

At the Poplar Creek show it was lightly raining. We pulled into the lot and immediately a guy approached selling "doses". I was attempting the purchase when security grabbed the guy. They didn't fuck with me. On our way in we found a guy selling tabs of blotter he called "Dove". They were pink with a picture of a blue bird on them. We dropped that shit and went in and sat on the lawn. Hippies were sliding down the hill in the mud. About halfway through the show, right around when those goofs were playing "Space" that shit kicked in. It wasn't like any acid I had ever had. In fact, it was like straight up speed. I was wired out of my fucking mind. Apparently my buddy Steve was too. We were getting a little antsy with the flaccid music. Steve yelled at me, "WHY THE FUCK DO THEY HAVE TWO DRUMMERS WHEN ONE WITH A BROKEN ARM WOULD DO?" We got loud and obnoxious and started mocking the Dead and its fans. Deadheads began flicking cigarettes at us. I heard one chick say, "If they don't like the Dead, they ought not come."

Finally and mercifully it was over. We went out to the parking lot and walked in circles for what seemed like hours looking for my car to no avail. Of course, nobody was leaving as they all sat around selling patchouli, tie-dyed crap, and vegetarian sandwiches. One broad asked me if I wanted a bumper sticker. I lied and told her I had no money. She said, "I'm going to give it to you anyway, but if you do have money, it's bad karma." Uh oh. Eventually we realized we were in the wrong lot and the car was actually on the other side of the pavilion.

We got in the car and I turned on the Loop. Thank God the Who was on. We cranked "Who Are You" as I pulled out onto 72. Steve was banging on the fucking dashboard. We rolled back into Evanston and I was so cranked up I could hardly sit still. We went to the Burger King across from NU. At the time they didn't sell food to go. You had to bag that shit yourself. We just said, "Fuck it" and sat down at a table. A guy I kind of knew named Brian Rabin sat down next to us and started talking a mile a minute. He seemed like he was speeding more than we were. I had to get the fuck out of there. My old buddy, you're moving much too slow. I dropped Steve off at his house in East Rogers Park and went home.

I couldn't sleep at all. I started to get worried. I think I was hallucinating just from being so damn tired. I got so scared I woke up my stepfather and told him what I had taken. He told me not to worry that he had been in the same shape before when he popped pills to stay on a gambling binge. He said he's stay up with me and watch TV. "Just don't tell your mother."

The next day I had to work at 4:00 p.m. I still hadn't slept. I made it through my shift and still didn't get to sleep that night 'til the morning came around. That was my last experience with the Dead.
