I honestly don't know. I've read the theory that Iran can be a counterweight to Saudi and/or Israeli power in the region. I don't see how propping up a belligerent regime to the detriment of ostensible allies benefits the U.S.

And let me say, I don't believe in the concept of "enemies" and "allies". There are just shared interests or opposing interests and all alliances are fluid.
