Not the point. A Gameboy is definitely about status rather than necessity. Kids aren't just looking for a phone to check in. They want the latest and greatest. Darkside was saying it's more about consumerism than safety and that's right.

Kids want a lot of things. For the kids, it might be about status. The kids are not buying the phone. My daughter has wanted one for two years. She'll get one when its necessary.

Darkside specified that the parent was worrying about status. That may exist but to say everyone is like that is pretty silly.

Come on, though. I know you're not an "advertising doesn't work" guy. Corporations aren't above advertising to kids. So when you want to buy your daughter a bare bones phone so she can check in and she says, "But Dad, Teegan and Layla have the iPhone8", the pressure will be there. I can understand you succumbing to it. Of course, you don't want your daughter to be an outcast with a flip phone.

Im not sure what you're arguing here.

Darkside alleged the reason for them even having a phone is status. I think my situation explicitly shows its not about that, because if it were, she'd already have one. She doesnt need it yet.

And yes, I hear about how every kid has an Iphone10 or whatever they are on. Still not getting one until she needs it.

And maybe its just me but the 9s and 10s I coach and see around my daughter arent really into cell phone shaming (or shaming of any kind) yet. They're at that age where everyone is just friends with everyone.

yeah if practice was late, ended early, or canceled, we got to wait *GASP*

crazy people existed when we were kids too. probably just as prevalently. I'm 35 and there were weirdos all over the neighborhood.

streetlights was our rule. when i was in 6th grade we moved to a place that was a block from the river. i'd spend all day riding mile and miles to fish sunup to sundown. never checked it.

That most pre-teens have no reason to have a cellphone and the vast majority of those that do have them for status rather than any practical reason.

most, though I know of a few where both parents work so much that nobody knows when or how the kid is getting picked up from day care until the last minute.

Well, I guess Im the exception and every other parent is just a slave to status.

My specific situation, as Ive laid out, is clearly not about status.

I'm getting my son the iPhone 6 for his first birthday next week. I assume it's drool-proof, right?

Im seeing a lot of "I never checked in" like a badge of honor.

I checked in sometimes. My dad was fairly strict with that, my mom not so much.

Checking in with parents once a day (id leave the house at 9 during the summer and come home for dinner) is not some horrible thing.

And if you ever used a payphone to call a parent around that age, then you have no argument here.

Also, the death of free range kids has been greatly exaggerated.

I have kids on my team that ride their bikes to practice then go to the park after and get home by dark. I met their parents at the first game.

She has like 4 (parents phones retire to the kids)but none of them leave the house. They're for games and such.

That's also something I see people complaining about. OMG, that kid has an Iphone! In many or even most cases its a non calling old parents phone. I dont see any issue with that.

Yea, but honestly the flip is kinda cool for the below 5 crowd.

Hell there were douchebags in their 30s that thought it was cool 10 years ago!

I rode my bike to baseball practice and games. It was usually essential than 5 miles or so. Didn't need rides. I think 2 maybe 3 kids had parents that would drop em off and pick em up.
One season my dad coached little league so I had a ride.

When I was a kid I worked in a coal mine and I would ride my bike for days in a row and my parents didn't even know I was alive and that was how we all liked it.

I'm not complaining about anything. You want your kid to have a phone, buy it. I would just suggest that in most cases claiming that status and consumerism have nothing to do with it is bullshit. But it's never too early to teach a kid an appreciation of Veblen goods.

My 1 year old thought it was fun to walk grandma through the house on facetime Sunday evening. Luckily, my wife was there to keep her from dropping my phone in the toilet.

I didnt say you were complaining. Ive heard the "OMG that kid has an Iphone" shriek frequently. Most times in my head Im thinking "its probably Moms non calling phone from 3 years ago"

Also the absolutes are being used on your side. Darkside's original post alleged that it was 100% about status, and not just that, but the parents being the ones concerned with it.

Its clearly not true in my case and several others I know who are in the same boat.

So the "its for status and has zero to do with safety" is just a stereotype really.

It would be like if I said Darkside only likes guns because it makes him feel more manly and it has zero to do with protection. There are absolutely people who fit that description. Doesnt mean all or even most gun owners are like that (they probably are, who knows)

The statistics support that. It's much more likely that he blows Don Tiny's head off at Lakemoor Fest than that he ever stops an intruder.

Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

In my day we didn't have hair dryers. If you wanted to blow-dry your hair, you had to step outside in the middle of a hurricane! You would get your hair dried but you would also get a sharp piece of wood driven clean through your skull--'Look, I'm a human head kebab!'--that's the way it was and we liked it!
