Is there not one youngish person out there who can host competent Bears talk?

Nope, not a one.

Mac dropped an interesting tidbit on facebook yesterday, namely, how frustrated he was that Nick Shepkowski had all the talent in the world for hosting sports radio but never took it upon himself to get some vocal training, nor did anyone in management assign it to him. It's nice that Mac cares that much, and he's right; Shep beat Les in a trivia contest one time but also sounded like a pimply teen every time he cracked a mic, and he's like my age.

I would put Shep well behind Finfer and Zawaski, both in terms of content and delivery.

I always thought Joe O had a decent enough presentation to be a long term host but he fell back on being the gambling guy who talks about gambling and hey, here are some bets about sportsball because I love gambling.

A WSCR radio host is akin to a bicycle, as a bicycle can be two of three things: lightweight, sturdy, and cheap. It cannot be all three. A radio host can be a combination of knowledgeable, entertaining, and likable, but never all three. Somehow management decided no host will provide any of these things.

Haugh's fine recapping the previous day's events and rumors, but not a hard smell test. You know he thinks what he did as a sports writer, the profession as a whole, should be held up on some sort of pedestal. He's not important, Joe also knows what they're doing doesn't mean anything, so I can see them clashing.

Wow, imagine being in not one, but TWO dying media platforms and your beef with another guy is a huge hurdle to getting a job that might last you till retirement.

Cowley was the original Bernstein in terms of Twitter rake-stepping, if you remember the time he told a colleague to "hottie up" her profile picture.

Big Cat said McNeil tipped him off that Bernstein was getting fired before it was announced publicly. Curious if McNeil got that heads up from WSCR management or someone else in the know.

to be clear this wasn't mentioned in the context of getting a gig at The Score, just Cowley telling old newspaper war stories. Cowley genuinely seems to be a guy who will go down with the dying newspaper business before he'd jump off.

I searched it, and didn't find the feud in print but there was this bit where Cowley tipped off the audience on Hanley being replaced https://archive.ph/I7WRF

I forgot all about Cowley breaking the news like that. He's such a little stinker.

I want to say that Spiegel had some beef with Cowley over the way Cowley reported some story about Mike Sirotka 25 years ago.

Was that when they traded him and didn't disclose his arm problem?

I think it was related to that. Spiegel was basically accusing him of lying.

Was it Marshall and Leila today? Assume so, haven't been listening much.

Also, I'll take Cowley over 'good vibes babe' Spiegel any day....he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. At least Bernstein and Cowley are outwardly in their smugness and opinions.

I get they feel the need to talk Bears on every show, but they are really struggling for content if they are now replaying interviews by J.Brisker on WGN, and then giving their hot takes.

Brisker is excited to be back, talked about meeting Ben Johnson, addressed his concussions, said he has had none until the past few seasons, but the big takes were how excited he sounded to come back, the need to now prioritize safety as a top need in the draft and Leila stating that Brisker probably has had concussions in the past, but didn't know it and played through it (but really didn't if he didn't know that he had one). Continued discussion about the issues with not taking him out of the game right away (even though he showed no symptoms)...

Anyways, there is a draft coming up and mini-camps, but pretty tough talk to take a fairly non-newsy interview with a player and then to have a topic on it.

In this time of year, if they want to talk football, just bring on guests, get some new voices who want to talk NFL/draft. It doesn't have to be local, even though they try to make it Bears centric since the league is popular, much better than talking Cubs bullpen issues.

Struggling is an understatement. Mitch cannot let this continue. They have to get a different pairing in middays.

This is not good. I will put on The Score when the milwaukee station decides to go dead air talking about UW or the Bucks. This show is just as tiring to listen to. Dear god their has to be someone more interesting and energetic than these 2. I think I would rather just hear them read box scores and weather and traffic reports instead of trying to create topical discussion.

They aren't bringing in any other candidates to host. Wouldn't they be doing that if they were considering other candidates?

Not sure why it takes so long to do something that seems very likely to happen though.

Idk. Maybe they are giving them a few weeks to see what the response is? the last time it was talked about on air Leila made it clear she was just a temporary fill in. So until something different is stated then that is what I am going with.

I flipped on the morning show for the first time since they fired Dan. They had Florio on for all of five minutes then went to a break. Asked him two questions, what the fuck? Fourteen minutes of ads to hear them ask one question about Aaron Rodgers and some glazing of Ben Johnson. Joke.

Spiegel keeps mentioning that he went through the same thing and it turned out well for him.

Leila did quit this same job 2 years ago. Things have changed for her, maybe she now wants it?

If I remember correctly, they did this in 2008 after North left. Mully and Hanley vacated the 10-noon shift, and there were indications that it would be a variety of fill-ins as sort of a public audition. It ended up basically just being Laurence Holmes every day, who then, guess who won the pony, got the show full-time with Dan Hampton, albeit only for like eight or nine months.

At the risk of repeating what's been said,I also was surprised/disappointed that the morning show had Florio on so briefly. Why bother? His mid day show appearances are lengthier and more substanitive. At least they were when Dan was there. And I also took note of Abbatacola being in the building.
And finally, salute to those who opine that the mid day show cannot go on like this. I have taken to putting the knuckleheads on WFAN New York on in the background instead, though I can't stand New York teams. The hosts are meatballs and their takes and the callers provide some unintended comedy.
