I don't recall any specific, actual racism, but 2025 Dan Bernstein would look at a local radio host calling a star player coddled and too stupid to listen to his betters in executive management and the doctors they hire and make multiple segments about the casual racism of treating players like machinery (or he would definitely try to coyly bring up plantations).

Mac and Terry didn't always hate Mike Murphy. When I was a kid, in the early days, Murph would have Mac on his weekend shows. They were friendly.

There was once a youtube video of Boers sharing a friendly moment with Murph. I can't find it.

The hatred started over Boers and Mac always playing that sound bite of him interviewing some old ass Cub. Where Murph said "I can picture you guys soaping up in the shower". Implying that Murph was gay. And they made fun of his soft sounding voice. Another gay reference.

And then Boers and Bernstein took the hatred to an amazing level.

Yeah I get all that. Mac never really got much blowback from Murph. It all got directed to Terry. And no doubt B&B took it to another level because that stuff fit right in their wheelhouse. And then throw on top that Murph was such a strange guy with some weird idiosyncrasies it made for quite the radio rivalry which continues to this day. Very rarely does a week go by that at some point Larry or Spiegel or someone doesn't mention Murph.

I always found it funny that Boers was so consumed with hatred in a feud that he himself instigated by calling the other guy a homo. Of course, Murph had a Hank Kingsley level of self-regard.

I'm glad Terry's doing well and seemingly a kinder person. But his modus operandi at the Score was mocking people's misfortune, bad luck situations, and illnesses.

Not only mocking but many times cheering other's terminal illnesses.

It was a combination of Murph being unable to laugh things off and Boers using a joke so many times that it becomes annoying.

I did not listen to Murph often. But in that time period, there was a place for a show like that. And there was some childish, yet marginally funny things, that he did. He had that Tool of the Week segment. And I recall him referring to Jim Rigglemon as Riggleamortis. That stupid crap appealed to me.

He was corny but it did work.

The guy had great ratings even though he had the most inconsistent time shifts of any of the original hosts. He stabilized the morning shift at the station when it had been a black hole for ratings for ratings, even during the golden era.

Guys like Sir jumped in on making fun of him but haven't sniffed the success he had in his career.

Murph was good for what and when he was doing his bit. Larry was the same in his small evening spots. He should go back there.

I don't remember too much of Murph and Fred (wasn't listening consistently, it was on in the car when I was taking driver's ed) but Murph's little noon-2 show was a good fit for his whole act. I know it goes completely against the traditional notion of stationality, but the Score did well when there was something for everyone. Even though I was a B&B guy through and through, I'd still have Mully & Hanley or Murph or even North on sometimes. I listened to more Murph than I ever did Spiegel & Mannelly.

I always thought Mitch was derelict in his responsibility to make two of his top talents stop sniping at each other like teenage girls--really just one sniping at the other way more. I don't know if it was a controversy-creates-cash Loop thing to let it keep simmering or if he was just afraid of Terry taking his ball and going home under the slightest admonishment, but the feud went from funny to embarrassing and he didn't do anything about it.

Laurence likely was emboldened by the star talent bagging on Murph, but he (and Drinky and Goff) had reason to not like the guy as he was a shitty boss to them as producers

The first half of the stations existence was caller-driven, which to me was way more entertaining. Each show had regular callers (both good and bad) that made up the fabric of the show. Now the station is a lecture series where outside opinions (good or bad) are no longer welcome. Its boring and the shows have no personality. Its one "expert" guest after another that all share the same opinion as the hosts and its shitty radio for the most part.

sure, but in typical Sir fashion, we didn't hear about it until Murph was no longer employed by the station, years after Sir worked for him.

Murph was by all accounts a tyrant, yeah, but Drinky and Goff hit the jackpot by getting to produce a show that was too cool to care about production. Gotta defer to Seacrest on this one but I have a feeling Murph worked hard to do a pretty okay show and got frustrated when others didn't make the same effort, and I don't think Abbatacola has exactly been regarded as one of the great go-getters of our time.

Seems Murph had to be a tyrant, look at how Goff and Holmes screwed up when they were given shots to host, these guys did and still do need a tremendous amount of professional guidance and strong production to keep them from embarrassing themselves.

Do find it odd that they still go to the Murph stuff, points to the fact that the current hosts are not providing any original or entertaining content, they have to talk about Murph or bring Terry back to make the show interesting.

Kind of pathetic when you think about it. Not sure if Larry could go out and secure a Browns Chicken sponsorship for a segment on his show, these guys do not bring the energy, drive or creativity that the original guys did in the station's early years.

Hah nice. Maybe the veterans committee will let you in.
