I had some incoherent thoughts about the Celtics and Rondo that I wanted to express here to see what you all think.

I think Danny Ainge had the right idea about rebuilding the team before it got too old (he's said as much), but he just couldn't accomplish his vision. He realized relying on Pierce and Allen for scoring was unsustainable due to their ages, so he traded for Jeff Green to infuse his team with youthful athleticism. I thought that was wise, but then Green missing a year ruined any chance of him assisting the big four in one last finals run.

He is also correct in trying to use Rondo as bait to replenish his roster. This gets into the second part of my post. I just don't get the hype surrounding Rondo. He cannot score, and his gaudy assist totals reflect the scoring prowess of the starting five rather than his own creativity. I'd like to see what kind of numbers he puts up when the primary scoring options retire or are traded. I simply do not understand the adoration I often hear from mostly undergrad-ish aged fans when it comes to a guy who can't score, can't shoot, and whose rise to fame is only a function of more talented teammates. He's not a star by any definition, and I think Ainge's efforts trade him are revealing, to say the least.

Then I'll revise my insinuation that love for Rondo is generally reserved for college students, but I still don't get it. He seems very simple to neutralize since he doesn't command a double team, nor is he a threat to score from the perimeter.

Welcome to the bandwagon.

Piss on Rajon Rondo.

For the record, I'm a huge Rondo fan.....but I'm not as well versed in his awesomeness as Farvio is, so I'm just gonna leave this to him.

That playoff game he had last year was possibly the greatest playoff game of all time.

He's given some of the gutsiest performances I've ever seen.

It's somewhat disconcerting regarding his interpersonal relationships with some teammates, as well as coaches.

I didn't want to oppose vegan, but now that Speeps has chimed in, I feel a lot better about my position. :P

I don't deny that he's put up some unbelievable numbers in some games, and I haven't mentioned his defense and on-court intangibles, which I'm told are great. But given his obvious scoring limitations, I just don't see how he can be mentioned in the same breath as guys like Rose, CP, Westbrook, Irving, and even Deron Williams. To me, he's clearly a tier below those PGs, all of whom can pressure the defense in more ways than Rondo is capable. I also believe the PGs I mentioned can carry teams by themselves, while Rondo's excellence is only apparent when others are responsible for the heavy lifting (previously Pierce, Allen, and KG).

This could all be said about Jason Kidd during his prime, and he's the best PG in the last 20 years.

The only knock I have on Rondo is that he tries too hard for assists sometimes at the expense of what's best for the team, like going out of his way to make a pass on a 2 on 1 fast break when the right play is to take the easy layup.

His teammates aren't nearly as good as you are implying offensively either, especially this year before his injury. There's no doubt in my mind that his numbers wouldn't drop off with a different team.

He's the only guy in the league besides LeBron capable of putting up a 20-20-20 game.

I think Rondo has more limits offensively than Kidd did in his prime, but I'll think about this a bit more before responding. I did want to say that I think GP deserves serious consideration for being the best PG during that past 20 years. Kidd averaged more rebounds, but Payton could score and dish. He also was the primary scorer and distributor for some time in Seattle, something I don't think Kidd could have done.
