No idea. I guess Paul was cool with Scott in NO?

Why wouldn't they try Sloan? Too expensive?

Byron Scott does have L.A. ties...as a Lakers' player during the "Showtime" era of the '80s. He also has plenty more experience as an NBA head coach, but not much of a defensive guy.

He also has a close relationship with Chris Paul. As does Mike Malone.

That's right! Byron once head coached CP3 in New Orleans, and Mike was an assistant at one time. Very interesting...

As a very casual only NBA guy can someone please answer this for me? Why unlike other sports does an NBA coach have to be buddies with the big star or so called man? I do not understand this dynamic or when it started? I understand Phil was Zen and nice guy but were Jerry Sloan and Pat Riley or Chuck Daley babying their players?

Oh and another thing I would rather have 5 guys average 18 pts each then deal with one CP3. In theory of course.

That's just not true. Spoelstra and Lebron aren't buddies. Popovich isn't buddies with his players (maybe Duncan, but they've been together for 16 years). It's more about respect and the buy-in. If there is an established star in place, you need to bring in a coach that will both command respect from, and be willing to give respect to, the main star. If your biggest chip isn't willing to buy into your philosophy, you're already fighting a losing battle as a coach. This is why Scott Skiles never coaches anything other than marginally competitive teams. No respectable star player should respect him as a coach.

Jordan was friends with Doug Collins but didn't respect or buy into his system. Collins was gone.

Also, your Chris Paul philosophy would get you fired as a GM. Five guys aren't going to average 18 points on any roster. Why don't you like Chris Paul? He's a good team guy and a great player.

I wasn't really picking on CP3 just throwing it out there. Hypothetically it seemed to me a team of many scorers is easier to win with than on guy scoring 35 a night and moody at times. Exceptions to every rule of course.

As far as the coaches you make good points and respect is good. I was asking mainly due to recent news about CP3, Howard and generally coaching choices.

Okay, I misunderstood your point. Yes, it's much better to have more than one scoring option, which is why OKC was so good when they had Harden. They had three guys who could carry you on a given night. Miami had that when Wade was still Wade.

You can't really use Dwight Howard as an example regarding coaches because he's just a five-alarm asswipe and an immature baby. Just ignore Howard.

I think it matters most when the star player is already in place and you're bringing in a new coach. That chemistry needs to be there. The player will have an opinion on the hire, but you also can't bring in a coach just because the player likes him. I do agree with you there.

Clips = Chris Paul's team, he's the Pete Rose of the NBA right now. Bring in whomever CP3 wants and get the Clips funky ass owner, Donald Sterling?, out of the picture.

Whomever said the Clippers won't win anything is correct--until the current owner dies or sells the franchise.

The 'Culverhouse Rule': no amount of player or coaching or front-office talent can overcome a head-in-ass owner. See also, Blackhawks, Chicago pre 2007. Lions, Detroit, currently. Cubs, Chicago, going forward. Sorry, Cub fans, the Rickets are in way over their heads and don't have clue one what they are doing. Theo's taking their money, hiring his friends and will go back to the AL once his time in Chicago is up. Theo and his acolytes fail in the NL---No Manny, No Ortiz and his top-shelf PEDs? No can do.

The Detroit Pistons were owned for the longest time by Bill Davidson---the last time the Pistons did anything in the post-season was the 2008 season--Davidson died in 2009.

Scott Skiles is getting mentioned as a potential Nets coach, but his defensive-minded style seems like a better fit with the young Pistons team. Might help that the new owner of the Pistons attended the same college as Skiles at the same time as Skiles. Joe Dumars probably wants Brian Shaw, but it might be worth it for the owner to employ a team of rivals strategy and make Dumars and Skiles work together. Doubt Skiles would have sat silently by while Dumars picked Darko 2nd overall with Carmello/Bosh/D Wade still on the board.

Don't see either Skiles or Jerry Sloan giving Donald Sterling the time of day.

Whomever hires Skiles needs to ask themselves this question:

Are we okay with Jim Boylan taking over as head coach mid-season in a couple of years?

Not cool Walt.

Who is the worst coach in the NBA now? Will the Bobcats hire him?

Active? I'd say D'Antoni.
