I always wondered why there was no NHL hockey in Wisconsin.
Part of it is Wirtz but the other part is that the bedrock of Wisconsin hockey is actually away from Milwaukee and its environs, more an adjunct of Minnesota than anything, really. It's huge up around La Crosse/Eau Claire, big in Madison, but Milwaukee has never really taken to it the same way. Couldn't give you the numbers for 1989 when Milwaukee expansion talk was bandied about, but consider that today, about 75% of Illinoisans live in/around Chicago whereas only 35% of Wisconsinites live in/around Milwaukee. This is really unfavorable for winter-weeknight scheduling both ways: because games on shitty January Thursdays necessarily can't be super-planned tailgate-party day trips for outstaters like Packers and Brewers games are (the statewide followings allow them to exist and even thrive despite the relative smallness of metro Milwaukee), you're forced to work within a smaller radius. This doesn't work for the hypothetical hockey team because they're generally outside that radius, and it doesn't work for their
actual NBA team because the Bucks are a flaming bag of kerosene-soaked shit and why bother.
