I wrote in a thread a few weeks ago that if they make it out of this current tough stretch at .500 they can contend. I still believe it to be true and a winning weekend puts them exactly at .500.

May is really the month to make hay. 18 of the 28 games are against below .500 teams. 10 are against last place teams. 16 are in Chicago.

I think they really need to come out of this month 18-10.

The difficulty is that they are throwing out a prayer on the mound 3 out of every 5 games at this point. They desperately need Sale to make it back on the mound early this month.

Agreed. Cleveland is really scuffling and then the play 3 out of 4 series against some of the worst teams in baseball (Cubs, Dbacks, Houston). Their offense should absolutely pulverize some of those pitching staffs.

The dog days is a time where they can make noise as well. From August 1st thru September 14th they have 25 home games and just 14 road games.

Sale obviously needs to come back. You can live with him, Quintana, and Danks and then whatever you get from 4/5.

Eaton needs to not miss any more time. The lineup is completely different and much worse without him at the top.

The bullpen hasn't been as atrocious lately. They're getting overused but a lot of bullpens are. I'd like to see Webb get a shot at closing sooner rather than later. Lindstrom isn't that guy.

I like what he brings to the table, but I see many DL stints and nagging injuries for him.

dropping 4 in a row as the month starts is not how you want this stretch to begin

Carroll looks pretty good, hopefully he sticks around and they kick Paulino to the curb

Maybe sox fans should examine the shortcomings of their GM instead of focusing on Theo. The pitching staff (starters and bullpen) is a joke and the line up is an injury prone mess.

Other than Abreu, this season is a total disaster.

Well, let's see:

#1 pitcher hurt (again)
best reliever done with back surgery
Starting 3B, 2B, CF all hurt
Top pitching prospect sucks ass and got demoted
"Top" 3B prospect you traded good young closer for is hitting in AAA the way Mike Olt is hitting in the majors (that's real bad)
Stud young RF you traded Peavy for is done for year with torn up shoulder
#5 pitcher lasted 3 starts before being put on DL with a phony injury

If that is not a total disaster, what would you call it?

Conor Gillaspie hit a home run yesterday. 3B is covered for at least another 4 years.

The bullpen started off terribly, but had a 1.00 ERA over the last 3 weeks or something like that. Paulino was bad and it was a terrible decision to have him as the #2 starter. Not sure if thats on Hahn, or Ventura/Cooper. Sale is hurt, among others. Blame the GM for injuries? Real smart.

Since April 16th, the Sox are 7-11, and they haven't won more than 2 games in a row yet this season. Its time for this team to go on a stretch of sustained success, and they have the opponents to do just that. They need to get 10 or 11 wins over their next 5 series. 3 of 4 from the Theo's, at least 2 of 3 from AZ, 9 game road trip to Oak, Hous, KC should be no worse than 5-4.

Paulino's failures were forseeable from the moment he was signed. He should have been backed up with at least one additional veteran starter signing.

Hahn did a good job to date. he played his cards well. The issue is that he has no cards left to play to make them better going forward. he really needs Davidson to be a MLB player, even though they have the 3B covered for the nexyt 4 years. I guess thats when CG dies?

False. Not sure what card(s) he can or can't play this year, but going into 2015 and 2016 he will make more moves. He'll also have $15mil more to work with next year with Dunn being off the books, and Danks being off the books in 2016. Maybe Hahn can trade Danks this year or next for prospects for a great trade.

His value as the reigning AL MVP will be through the roof so I don't think the Sox can afford him.

I agree that they really cannot afford to give up any of what little they have to make a move this year. They do, however, have the ability to give salary relief to another team, which we have seen, is a pretty strong negotiating chip.

i'd be afeared of dealing Dunn and leaving Abreu totally naked in that lineup.

Sale isn't hurt long. He'll be back soon. Bullpen has been much better lately, something like 2 ER in their last 30 IP. Alexei has been fantastic this year. Flowers and Viciedo have looked much better than previous seasons. Eaton is reckless but he's also better than most people predicted. Dunn is having a really good season so far. Quintana has been solid. The team is only a game under .500 so far and is an expected 70 win team. I wouldn't call this season a total disaster thus far.

That Danks money is rough.

Two more years.

The season is not a total disaster. They are right where they were thought to be pre season after losing a real good young player for the year and another one for a long stretch

They are a closer and 5th starter (two things you often find in your own organization) away from 85 wins, imo

I thought Rienzo warming up in the 9th was an indicator that Johnson would be back

I hope so. Rienzo could be an effective reliever but he's not a starter.

Danks has been his own worst enemy with walks. 21 in 42 innings is not good. Maybe trying to paint the corners too much?
