Hawk said Beckham went to the official scorer after a game and told him he made an error on a play when it was ruled a hit. The scorer changed it and saved the starter 3 earned runs. I bet it was the game against the Royals. It was a horrible call.

So Avilas goes spikes high into Beckham and in his next AB Beckham hits a bomb. Very nice. I'd still like to see Avilas eat one before this game is over.

Teams appeal these error vs hit/earned vs unearned run calls all the time, usually to help out a trade-bait pitcher's numbers. As the Cubs did in 2006 before dealing Maddux:

Because of the change, Maddux was charged with one earned run instead of six in the game against the Florida Marlins, lowering his ERA to 4.60 from 4.99.

The ruling involved a play in the fifth inning. With two out and none on, Florida's Hanley Ramirez beat shortstop Ronny Cedeno's one-hop throw from the hole.

Ramirez was credited with a single, and the Marlins went on to score five runs off Maddux. With the ruling change, Jernick took away the hit and gave Cedeno an error, making the runs unearned.
