Nobody said they have done everything right (EJAX!) but I am happy with having a plan to try and build something great v The Fly By Night, HOPE FOR A WILDCARD SPOT...and HOPE WE GET HOT, then try and act like it all went according to plan and the reason they win is because of their ability to find great players...then think they really do things better than everyone else for the next decade.
Touche, and i'll also give you that where the cubs are right now certainly looks like it's going to be more exciting/entertaining/consistently-good-over-the-long-term than if you did annual re/loadings and tried to catch lightning in a bottle...
...but at the same time who's to say that this "plan" has been the PROPER way to do it. Yes early returns are promising as hell, but what if you end up like the 90s braves without their title? Or if you get one? Right now semantically speaking i'd say that the giants' "plan" is the PROPER way to do things, seeing as they've win 3 of the last 5 WS and they've done it by tanking to get Pablo Sandoval and Brandon belt who have prodigious power like Bryant and rizzo respectively, right? Lester > bumgarner any day of the week riiiight?
I don't wanna descend into cobtrarian territory enough for 8675309 to follow me around the board and bitterly reference #MyKindOfCar, but I DO want to say that it sure seems like we're anointing/crowning-the-ass of the cubs before they've won anything other than ~30 games in April/may. Yea, it might just be a formality/only-tine til they win some WC berths/divisions and quite possibly pennants/rings.... But to sit here on 6/3/2015 and to definitively say that the cubs' plan is THE PROPER WAY TO DO IT you might be inclined to ask "...do what?" And while i'd gladly take the 90s braves every day of the week if I was a cubs fan (cuz #TheyWereGood for 6 months out of every year for 10+ years and in the end baseball is about entertainment more than winning) I suspect cubs fans here would scoff at ONLY 90s braves type success cuz we're poised for history here.
If you could choose between the 90s braves (good for 10+yrs / 1 title) or the 2010s giants (3 titles in 5 years, no playoffs the other 2yrs and for the sake if argument let's say they don't make the playoffs for another ~5yrs starting this year) what do you pick?
(inb4 both cuz clearly these cubs are the fusion of the 90a braves and the 2010s giants. Duh)
