Yeah it was a smart play by Bread man. I read the DH article. He left a lot on the table in the hopes that the Hawks will pay him after the extension expires. Saad got greedy, and it's fine. He chose money over winning, and that's what most guys do.
But, I question whether or not Saad really chose more money by going to Columbus. Sure, in the short run his contract pays him more, but being a lifetime Hawk on a team that has won multiple Cups and being a big contributor has to translate to some good $$$ opportunities that he will never see playing in Columbus, right?
Being seen as a guy who took a discount to continue playing alongside Toews and Hossa would earn him cult status amongst the fans and sponsors. Plus, the post career opportunities you still see guys like Savard, Espo etc making money from.
Just seemed very short sighted to me at the time. Granted, Columbus suddenly turning into a good team makes his decision seem wiser than it was at the time, but i still think he would've been happier and wealthier in the long run had he stayed.
