A perfect example right now where compromise and pragmatism could work is corporate tax reform. The Dems are basically ok with a 25-28% rate, and the Republicans stand at 15-20%. This contrasts with the current 35% rate. Both sides recognize that we are uncompetitive in that regard and that our global tax system is unique among major countries. Trillions in corporate cash are parked overseas because of that system. But it is getting hung up on stupid things with how to treat passthroughs and taxing private equity carried interest.

Passthroughs were created to get around the high corporate tax rate and double taxation. But since they were first created, the qualified dividend rate is much lower (20% or less), and in tandem with a lower corporate rate, we wouldn't need S Corps anymore.

i don't think thats a main tenant of either pragmatism, conservatism, or liberalism though.

Progress is the name of the game. Over time people will buy into your ideas if they get to see them in action.
