i finally got around to this movie, recording it off of FXM a few months ago. i had already heard it was a let down, and one of those "too dark to see shit" movies.
and i can't disagree. this was a real missed opportunity. first of all, the wendigo legend belongs to the native american culture. it should've revolved around a reservation community or at least a native american family. it does have graham greene who serves absolutely no purpose as a character except to tell the white man about the legend.
the plot is about a meth head dad that gets attacked in an abandoned mine (because that's where his lab is). it turns out he has 2 sons, and the younger one was also attacked. the older one, the main character, goes to school and his teacher starts to suspect he is being abused. her backstory is she was abused by her alcoholic dad who died and she returned to live with her brother.
all of this seems like it should lead somewhere, a connecting of themes or something but it never really does. it just hangs there, begging for a better story.
there are some cool practical effects, and there is one big shot of the creature toward the end. but the characters don't really grip you (not even fat damon) and the effort of having the audacity to set up killing off a kid (and a weak payoff) is a waste.
it's not a terrible movie but it's too slow and simple to really recommend it even as a boring background watch to kill time.
really a shame, though. it had potential.
