It's expensive, energy intensive, and the wastewater seems to be a problem for the EPA. But they really have no choice. The Saudis get 40% of their water from desalinization.

Next time I see you I'll give you a book I have. It's called "Unstoppable Global Warming... Every 1500 Years" by Singer and Avery. It may not be entirely correct in its refutation of anthropomorphic global warming but it raised a compelling case that much of the data causing the hysteria are bad data and that global warming and cooling periods are A) common throughout history on a fairly predictable cycle and B) tend to be beneficial vs. The cold periods in which illness, starvation and global population declines occur. Again, it might not be entirely correct but it also probably isn't entirely wrong.

Define "available". Any published book is available in any library via interlibrary loan, and I don't think anyone would want it any other way. Now if they are pimping gay pr0n at the front-desk's "Staff Selections" kiosk in a middle school library, then, yeah, that's a problem.

I'm aware of California's tradition of water mismanagement. That's, in part, why I said water management won't be addressed very easily there.

Regarding CO2: Our current atmospheric levels are approximately 40% higher today than they were at the dawn of industrialization. Most of this increase has occurred since the 1970s and is the result of fossil fuel consumption. I don't see the ambiguity here.

I'm just a dope on a message board but I can't help that think that the next major technological revolution will revolve around water. More or less we get water the same way today as we have since the dawn of time. We essentially have water shortages in places on every continent , the world is 2/3 covered by water, the pesky problem is that it is salt water.

We have already developed desalinization technology (as mentioned by Nardi), the problem is that it is expensive, and energy intensive. It isn't hard to envision at some point in the next 15-20 years a cooperative of western states will get together and invest in a public/private tech program to create a much cheaper desalinization technology. Once you get there, basically the entire continent of Africa becomes a fertile oasis.

When it comes to JOrr at this point, it absolutely is.

I think the cost is insane and it has a huge impact on the environment. You would think some really smart people would have figured out a way for it to make sense financially.

Well, they better get started on that quick given the impacts from climate change that are already taking place in Southern California and much of the Southwest--and the projections for future droughts in both areas. The future isn't going to last forever.

I saw a cool technique on youtube where, for places with little water but lots of fog, they set up collection screens. I was surprised at the amount of water they harvested, even in the desert.

Stop watering the almond trees is a lot quicker answer than anything else if it does get to a truly critical shortage.

Climate change is real and its affecting water in the west. This is a fact. I agree weather ultimately runs in cycles but when there are hundreds of years of data on water and ice levels that are at their lowest point in recorded history, its a problem.

Somebody on Twitter says otherwise, and Jorr runs with it regardless of it being true or not. That's my point.

The climate is always changing. The two pertinent questions are 1) Is man a major cause of current change? and 2) Can man doing anything to change it? And when I ask the second question, I mean is man actually willing to do what it takes to change it. And "man" doesn't just refer to those in Brooklyn and Berkeley but also those in Calcutta and Shanghai.

I'll ask you a real question. How far are you willing to go to halt Climate Change? Just from your posting here I assume you may not have an SUV or a big screen and even if you do I believe you would be willing to eliminate those luxuries. But beyond that, how far would you go before you decide the measures for halting Climate Change which we cannot even be sure will work or are necessary at all simply aren't worth it? Would you live by candlelight? Drive a horse to work? Raise and plant your own food? Go without running water?
