We would have had our Basset Hound 11 years in January, we put her down this morning. Who knows how old she was when we got her, maybe 2 but maybe as old as 4. She was the worst dog I'll ever own.

She didn't listen.
She smelled terrible.
She barked all the time.
When we got her we had a Golden Retriever at the time that maybe barked 2x a year. After 4 weeks of the Basset in the house the Golden Retriever barked all the time as a result of the Basset barking.
She ate at various times: horse shit, her own shit, other dogs shit, kids shit when they were being potty trained.
She was incredibly athletic and could jump into cars, on top of tables. She'd to the latter to steal food.
The first two years we got her she would be the first person in the bed every night. When my wife and I would go to bed I would try to move the Basset, not out of the bed, just so my wife and I could sleep comfortably. Basset would try to bite me and bark, growl at me. After the first two years she stopped trying to bite me, but would still growl to voice her displeasure at being moved.
The last 4 months her farts were so horrible that we couldn't have guests at the house.
She ate every night between 5-6 o'clock. She would bark non-stop starting at 3 o'clock until she ate.
Taking her on walks alternated between me dragging her lazy ass behind me, or her completely stopping and laying down until she decided it was time to walk again.

I'll never ever love a dog as much her.

Sorry to hear it OP. Dogs are part of the family and leave a hole when they’re gone.

Very sorry :(

We had a Boston that checked at least half those boxes. We put him down in July 2004. Will probably never have a dog again but I still miss him.

Sorry Post that’s a tough one. Great story. Will you guys get another dog? We put our dog down in January and after 3-4 weeks decided we couldn’t be without a dog. We rescued a 6 year old boxer and my wife, who was never a dog person LOVES this dog. I’ve never had one make it to 11 so while tough that we only have a few years with her we have loved rescuing her.

T Bone, fun for me to respond to this. In this thread in September I reported we put down our other dogs. So Two Post and Three Post have really been emotional about both dogs dying. The fun part is that both of them unprompted and independent of the other told me they want to get another dog. It filled up my heart with joy. It just reinforces the message we are telling them that if we don’t want to be sad we won’t have dogs, but they realize the sadness is worth the joy of owning dogs.

We travel A LOT between x-mas and Easter (our goal every year is 20 ski days) and we want to do some things around the house that are much easier without dogs (replace fence in back yard). So we will talk with the kids about a new dog early in 2025. We are going to let them have a lot of input: type of dog, name of dog, if we want two dogs, etc. In a very real way these next dog or dogs will be more their dogs than the previous two. The last two dogs were really me and Mrs. Post dogs, these next will definitely be theirs.

Mom's 80th birthday, so I'm back in IL this week. Grey skies, rain, and fucking cold....this place is depressing.

everywhere is depressing when looking out of the window of an access road motel.

It wouldn't even take effort to find fun things here this time of year. There isn't enough time for everything to do.

Cold?? It was 50 this afternoon. Not even close to cold. Sounds like a new Floridian humblebragging.

I live in a one car household. Last week my wife was driving to an appointment when she was sideswiped unexpectedly. Pretty extensive damage to the driver side passenger door. Enough that it will not open. Found out this morning she was hit by an uninsured 17 year old kid. Real nice. I only have 3 payments to go to pay the vehicle off and we had taken real nice care of it the last 5 years. Hoping that the damage isn't so much that it can't be fixed because I was really looking forward to no car payments for a while. Just a frustrating situation to have to go through.

My wife got sick the first day we were in Mexico. Had to fly home Wednesday. To add insult to injury our clothes washer went out on us the day before we flew out so we had to buy a new washer and dryer. Car still in the shop for a few more weeks as that gets sorted out. Quite a run of bad luck lately

Home sick yesterday with stomach flu, just couldn't get warm and shivered all day long. My wife was trying to be helpful and said she would use the snowblower. I went out, got it started and gave her a tutorial. I thought she was just going to do the driveway and sidewalk but apparently she wanted to clear a path to the back patio door. She sucked the back rug into the machine. Pretty sure the shear pin is gone. I'll have to go out there and see if I can dislodge the rug from the auger. I had to bundle up this morning and shovel the driveway by hand. 90 minutes.... and I'm cold again. :(

Dang man that sucks. That sounds like exactly something my wife would do as well.

Should have just done it myself when I was feeling like shit. Been quite a run of bad luck at the T-Bone manor of late. Car accident, washer and dryer died, had to fly home early from vacation in Mexico and now this, all in the span of 3 weeks.

Got a call this morning from my wife that we have water leaking through the 1st floor ceiling of our den from the upstairs master bathroom. Working from home today and waiting for a guy to come and cut some holes in the ceiling to see if he can diganose and possibly fix. The good news. is that I may be able to watch some Masters action while working at the kitchen table.

We had similar a couple years ago, water leaking in the basement anytime the Jacuzzi was used in the bathroom above. I figured out a nut holding the drain in place was loose. Youtube guided me to an easy fix with nothing more than simple tools and plumbers putty. No cutting holes or crawling under the tub.

I hope yours turns out easy.

I had this issue when I first bought the cabin. It was leaking from the master shower to the basement. The plumber ripped open the wall, and no issues with the plumbing. It was actually leaking through the tile/grout in the shower. It was a good reason to put in a new stone shower.

Got a guy over to look. We plugged up the shower and filled the drain pan with a bunch of water and then unplugged to see if it was the drain pipe or if it was water leaking from one of the pipes bringing water in. It was the drain pipe. He will come over early next week and punch holes in the ceiling and go from there. He does plaster which is what our ceilings are so he will be able to match what he knocks out but it will be an expensive fix and a messy job. Not what I was hoping to hear but it has to be fixed so nothing I can really do about it. He charges by the hour and is a big talker so thankful I won't be home when he is working because I don't want him talking my ear off.

our school district just cancelled school on Friday because too many teachers took the day off, less than 24 hours notice. Unbelievable. You have 3 months off every year, you can handle working on Good Friday.

Are they not allowed to take their contractually defined vacation days?
