I don't think the Derby winner raced yesterday.

In other news, I'm hearing a rumor that Caesar's has purchased Hawthorne. I guess we'll know soon enough if that's true.

Yes, typing is a skill I don't really have. But it was the right race, and the right pace...got lazy and didn't use program numbers

Hard to believe Baffert has a horse better than Arrogate in his early development in Cornucopian, who's competing in the Arkansas today.

Arrogate placed 3rd in his first race at 6f behind Accelerate, who came in second. Cornucopian won his first by 6 lengths while putting up a 100 figure.

Still, he's going to have to beat Sandman and Coal Battle. I think Sandman has a chance but he has to give me more than 3-1.

Not following the Dery trail closely but it's interesting where IradOrtiz ended up in the game of musical saddles.

Today

Aqueduct Wood Memorial...just not a fan of the NY circuit...think that Captain Cook is going to pounce here but really not interested. They haven't had an impact on the Derby. Since 2003 the winner of this prep in the Derby 43:0-0-1...not good

Santa Anita Derby will be a Match race between Journalism and Citizen Bull but keep an eye on Barnes..although running with barn mate Cornucopian that has garnered a lot of attention, could move forward on the trail

Race 10 Bluegrass (Derby Points 100-50-25-15-10)
This race has been run since Keeneland opened in 1937…23 winners of this race have gone on to win the Derby, 2nd only to the Florida Derby…however none since 2007 (although 5 of last 7 Derbys had a Bluegrass winner 2nd or 3rd)

Tampa horses have done well in this race and a rematch between 4-Owen Almighty and 6-Chancer McPatrick is intriguing, the latter needing to turn tables will need more of a pace setup. 5-East Avenue has thrown out some clunkers last two and should be a price, but man if he can find what he had here last fall at Kee for the Breeders Cup win, could be unstoppable…3-Burnham Square will benefit from the rest (that he didn’t have last time going from a G3 to G2 in about 3 weeks)…look for him to bounce back. 1-River Thames ran quite well in the Fountain of Youth and can’t be overlooked. Tough race, as it should be. Favorites have won 5 of last 6 years…could be one of those Irad/Jose races that leave you scratching your head, so be aware.

is this just some kind of red tape BS or are OTB's going to be locked out of betting the derby? it seems like you can still bet with cash as normal...what would this ultimately effect?

You're gonna have to bet through an ADW that isn't Club Hawthorne.

It has to be a lot or they would just pay it so they could get the signals.

This is a disaster. Simulcast handle is down over 20% from the same period last year.

It's not some new thing. They haven't taken any CDI signals since the last Churchill meet. The Derby has raised the stakes and now it's suddenly getting some ink.

Hawthorne seems to be in a lot of trouble. I'm a loyal Club Hawthorne player, but I have to think about what would happen if I hit a big payoff on a horizontal. Am I gonna get paid?

And the Illinois Racing Board is absolutely useless. They cancelled the April meeting due to "no agenda items." There's one track left in the Chicago area and it appears to be failing and the people tasked with regulating the business have nothing to talk about? Come on.

And the State of Illinois has a dormant casino license that Hawthorne isn't using. It's ridiculous that no one is howling about the situation. What's the point of even having a racing board or a gaming board? I don't think there will ever be a bigger issue to deal with than this.
