Definitely has a better skill set, but hasn't been able to unlock it as of yet. At this piont Dalton is better, and probably always will be. JF has an uphill battle.

Not all his fault. Needed better coaching.

-Good quote though from the Take The North Podcast with Grote and Wiederer, where Wiederer had talked to Luke Getsy in '23 after JF took off for a running touchdown against Detroit, which in actuality the play called was for Darnell Mooney over the middle for a TD. He just couldn't read the field and freelanced.

Explain that.

Um, "He just couldn't read the field and freelanced." Shit happens.

Explain why he was benched for R.Wilson and never returned in 2024. A year after the DET game on a better team with better coaches. He STILL couldn't read the field and was benched for the season.

Is the JET coaching staff going to unlock Justin's code? I wouldn't bet on it, but anything is possible. Doesn't help that Justin gets overwhelmed thinking about the offensive game plan.

Justin, “You know, could be the coaching, I think. At the end of the day, I can’t be thinking when the game comes. I prepare myself throughout the week and then when the game comes, it’s time to play free at that point. Thinking less and playing more.”

Oh no he missed a "read" to Darnell Mooney. Excommunicate him from the NFL and Excommunicate him now I say!

Ironically the DC of the opposing team from that very game had no problen with signing him the very moment he became a free agent and anointing him starting QB.

""Bricksonian Logic" at work yet again. You'll be arguing that he is "Just A Backup" even after he signs to be someone's starting QB this week

I believe I predicted him to be a guy who starts next year until he gets benched for a rookie.

Oops!

Is there anything you’ve learned about Justin Fields that makes you feel he can be a consistent winner? - @Chris10938269

I’m not sure that I have, to be completely honest. I’m very much in the wait-and-see approach with him. The biggest concern sources expressed to me with Fields, shortly after the Jets signed him, was processing. One high-ranking source went as far as to say he expected Tyrod Taylor to eventually take over the starting job. All I touched base with agreed you can improve processing, or a coordinator can make it easier on them. One offensive coordinator told me it’s usuallysomething that never really gets good, just better.

Granted, many had similar reservations on Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield before they found new life with the Vikings (now Seahawks) and Bucs. For me, it’s about seeing Fields do it. Everything else to this point is just assumptions and educated guesses.

You see why the Jets believe he’s worth the investment, though. There is the potential for a top-10 quarterback if Tanner Engstrand can marry improved processing with Fields’ physical ability.

Poor "processing" is every bit the concern with Williams that is was with Fields when he played for the Bears. Both guys have the ability to extend plays, but they rely excessively on that ability because they can't read defenses particularly well.

I don't think that is fair to Williams yet to say it is every bit the concern with him as it was with Fields. There is no doubt concern about it but IMO the difference is that with Fields it was always a concern and there was never a time in which he looked like he could process things. Williams had stretches where it looked better and that he was seeing things better and making quick decisions. But there was a lot of stretches where it did not appear to be there. Hopefully Johnson and this new staff can help him get those things figured out.
