I thought Barenaked Ladies killed him like 30 years ago.

I put it on and they're playing the Revivalists. Guess I missed it. I feel like I never heard much from Pet Sounds on the station. Maybe Norm Winer didn't like it. I heard Lin play "Wouldn't It Be Nice" once and said he got away with it.

I never got that much into the Beach Boys myself, to be honest. Sure, I love Pet Sounds like everyone else, and some of the old stuff is fun, but that's about it.

Damn. Too bad. I never appreciated them until I was in my 40s.

The mono version of "Help Me Rhonda" is an all-timer.

Didn’t know he lived in St. Charles for a few years in the late 90s.

They played about five or six songs and then moved on to other things for a while. Although, I did hear another five song set later in the day and heard "Good Vibrations" on Q101, of all places.

The Beach Boys are probably my favorite band from the era when rock was more of a popular music phenomenon and less of an art form, call it pre 1965.

My first concert was Beach Boys and Chicago, at the old Chicago Stadium. Circa 1976.

But of course, Brian Wilson (and Van Dyke Parks) were instrumental in turning it into an artform, which I'll admit is my favorite era.

It's my favorite era as well, but there's room for both. I can't subsist on a steady diet of Lou Reed, just like I can't subsist on a steady diet of Del Shannon.

i'm glad he got to see "SMiLE" finally released the way he intended it, thanks to al jardine. his 2004 version was really rough to listen to because his vocals were shot (i thought he had a stroke, but i guess it was just him getting older and less polished). the "Sessions" that were released were put together very well. even though the album itself is uneven, and it still doesn't beat "pet sounds", the direction he was going was definitely much more artful.

"our prayer", "surf's up" and "good vibrations" were standouts.

i'm actually surprised he lived as long as he did. i'm sure mike love wanted him dead a long time ago.

RIP, and surf's up.

I received Pet Sounds as a gift when I was fairly young. I listened to it many times long ago and have listened to it several times through the years and I still don’t get it. I like a lot of the Beach Boys but never quite got the fascination of Pet Sounds. Most of it just seems weird and disjointed to me.

I don't know, it's pretty cohesive to me: thematically, only "Sloop John B" doesn't really fit with in with melancholy but childlike longing. Musically, it's all vocal harmonies and overstuffed Wrecking Crew arrangements. It sounds weird compared with prior Beach Boys songs, yeah, but it's a well-realized concept.

Pet Sounds, Freak Out!, Blonde on Blonde, and Revolver all came out in like a ten-week span. We'll never have an explosion of world-changing creativity like that ever again. If we're lucky, we can have a summer of new subscription-based apps.

I think you guys are both right in a certain way. There are songs on Pet Sounds that I just won't listen to. I don't really care about the instrumentals. "Sloop John B" seems like it fits more with the older surf stuff.

But "God Only Knows" is maybe the most gorgeous thing ever written despite the disjointed break in the middle. Brian and Carl trading lines of the refrain should be enough to make anyone weep.

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Good Vibrations"'- which I consider part of Pet Sounds even though it's not actually on the album- are perfect pop songs.

I think it gets so much love because it was such a departure from stuff like "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Babraba Ann."

Burt Bacharach is considered a great songwriter but he doesn't get the "genius" label like Wilson. I think Pet Sounds is pretty comparable to some of those Bacharach-David-Warwick records that came out around the same time.

Yeah, the title track is just the-studio-as-instrument wankery, but to my point about the summer of '66, still a good thing that they did it.

I love "God Only Knows," but "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" is my favorite track on the album. This should come as a surprise to precisely zero people here.

Should have collaborated with more past-their-prime post-punk legends. Maybe Chrissie Hynde didn't return his calls.

I agree. Like I said, I rarely listen to it but, and I can't put my finger on exactly why this is, the album would be lesser without it.

It's sort of like "Gary's Got a Boner" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" on Let It Be. I think those songs are stupid and I'd never listen to them outside the context of the album, but the record somehow wouldn't be as great without them.

Yeah, it's an important piece of connective tissue. So much of the album and Wilson's growth as a songwriter is about those baroque-rock arrangements and the departure from the surf sound. The musicians need a little moment in the sun to define all that as more than just new wallpaper for the band. But I do like "Let's Go Away for Awhile" as a little interlude before a big 1-2-3 punch.

Other good examples besides the ones you mentioned: "Treefingers" on Kid A, "Till the Morning Comes" on After the Gold Rush, and the definitive example as far as I'm concerned, "Vicar in a Tutu" on The Queen Is Dead
